"Wednesday: Season 2" Teaser Trailer: Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) Returns to Nevermore Academy with More Murder, Mayhem, and Misanthropy
Jenna Ortega returns as Wednesday Addams for a new Nevermore Academy school year filled with all-new supernatural mayhem.
To be perfectly honest, when we first heard that Netflix was going to make a Wednesday Addams series, we thought it was a terrible idea. First off, who could they possibly cast that would be better than Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams? She’s our Wednesday. There’s no one better. Surely there’s no one who could deliver a performance better than what Ricci did in those classic Barry Sonnenfeld-directed Addams Family films. Another thought: who would want to watch a show just about Wednesday Addams? That would be a tough sell, right? Weeeell... we couldn’t have been more wrong.
As it turned out, the Netflix show Wednesday became a pop culture phenomenon. And no shade to Christina Ricci (she’s still the best), but Jenna Ortega might have been perfect casting for this new, angsty teen version of Wednesday. And it doesn’t hurt to have a name like director Tim Burton calling the shots, directing half of the first season.
Wednesday might not have been a groundbreaking series, as it was still riding the coattails of hit shows like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale, where they take seemingly innocuous, beloved franchises and give them a dark and edgy twist. But surprisingly, the show was an entertaining delight. Much credit goes to the cast, as Ortega emerged as a bona fide rising star, and Emma Myers, who plays Enid Sinclair, Wednesday’s cheery werewolf roommate, stole every scene she was in. And the producers even got Christina Ricci to come down to play a part in the first season. Which was kinda cool. And weirdly, the pairing of Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Gomez and Morticia Addams worked for the most part, despite the idea of them together sounding absolutely crazy.
Wednesday was simply this weird little supernatural comedy series that exceeded our expectations. To the rest of the world, Wednesday became one of the most buzzed-about shows in recent years, resulting in one of Netflix’s most-watched original series on their platform. It’s also skyrocketed Jenna Ortega into the stratosphere, and welcomed back Tim Burton into the people's good graces after a couple of lackluster feature films. Now Burton and Ortega have become a winning team after last summer’s blockbuster Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
Well, the band is back for a second season of Wednesday. Netflix has released the first teaser trailer, offering a look at everyone’s favorite dark and misanthropic teen as she continues to navigate the hallowed halls of Nevermore Academy as a sophomore, causing her usual mischief and chaos wherever she goes. This is Wednesday’s first time willingly returning to a school, instead of being asked to leave. She has school friends that she tolerates, but she also has new supernatural mysteries to plunge into and solve. Because lest you forget, “whenever there’s murder and mayhem, you will always find an Addams.”
Zeta-Jones and Guzmán are back as Morticia and Gomez, with Isaac Ordonez returning as Wednesday’s younger brother, Pugsley, and Fred Armisen back as Uncle Fester. Joy Sunday is also back as Nevermore Academy’s prima donna Bianca Barclay, as is Emma Myers as the ever-so upbeat Enid.
Joining the cast of Season 2 as guest stars are Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, Frances O’Connor, Heather Matarazzo, and Christopher Lloyd, who we all know as the beloved Uncle Fester from the original ‘90s comedies, now playing a new character.
With creators and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar back at the helm, alongside Tim Burton serving as executive producer and director of several episodes, Wednesday: Season 2 promises to deliver even more dark and delightful adventures. In what has become a more common practice on Netflix, this new season will be split into two parts. Part 1 of Season 2 will premiere on August 6th, followed by Part 2 on September 3rd.
