Shazam helmer David F. Sandberg Brings PlayStation’s Horror Universe to Life in a New Terrifying Slasher, Starring Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A'zion, and Peter Stormare
Picture this scenario: You walk into a ramshackle general store in a small town, just off the road. You see the clerk and ask him about the whereabouts of your sister, who vanished some time ago. But the person you're asking looks a lot like Peter Stormare, the psycho from Fargo, only he's wearing a dirty trucker cap and sporting a scruffy black beard. You know you're in trouble when he already assumes she's "gone missing."
The first official trailer for Until Dawn, a new horror thriller based on the popular PlayStation video game, starts in the way all good slasher films do — with a group of young twenty-somethings searching for a missing friend, only to find themselves trapped in a terrifying situation they're not yet prepared for.
Director David F. Sandberg helms this upcoming video game adaptation. Sandberg began his career in horror with his breakout hit Lights Out (2016), based on his viral short film of the same name. He followed that with Annabelle: Creation (2017), a prequel to Annabelle that was part of The Conjuring Universe franchise. However, Sandberg stepped away from horror for a bit, spending the next few years exploring the DC superhero universe with Shazam! (2019) and its sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023). The first film was a success, but the sequel? Not so much. Sandberg was taken aback by the negative reaction to Shazam! Fury of the Gods and vowed to never make another superhero movie again — at least for the foreseeable future. True to his word, he's now returning to his horror roots with this upcoming adaptation of the horror video game.
Until Dawn stars Ella Rubin (Anora), Michael Cimino (Love, Victor), Odessa A'zion (2022's Hellraiser), Ji-young Yoo (Moxie), Belmont Cameli (Along for the Ride), and Maia Mitchell (Good Trouble).
They play a group of friends who go searching for a friend's younger sister a year after she vanished without a trace. The group finds themselves traveling through a small, rundown town where they stop at a local dime store. Character actor Peter Stormare plays the local weirdo who works behind the front desk at the store. They soon uncover a strange coincidence — it seems this small town has become the hub for a large number of unsolved disappearances. And the group quickly learns why.
Now trapped in a nightmare, the group of friends soon realizes they’re stuck in a loop, reliving the same terror-filled night repeatedly as a masked killer hunts them down. It’s a time loop like Groundhog Day but with a slasher twist. As they are picked off one by one, the group quickly understands they have a limited number of deaths left, and their only chance to escape is to survive until dawn.
The film is produced and co-written by horror filmmaker Gary Dauberman, whose writing credits include recent horror hits like Annabelle, The Nun, and IT Chapter 1 and 2. Dauberman co-wrote the screenplay with former Attack of the Show! host Blair Butler, who previously wrote the 2022 vampire thriller The Invitation and the 2019 supernatural thriller Polaroid.
In a previously released behind-the-scenes peek, Sandberg and Dauberman claim that this new horror movie will not be a direct adaptation of the PlayStation video game but rather an extension of the Until Dawn horror universe. It will have the same "vibe" and "tone" of the video game for fans to enjoy.
Until Dawn is coming to theaters on April 25th.
