“Harvest” Trailer: Caleb Landry Jones Faces Superstition, Starvation, and Societal Collapse in Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Medieval Folk Horror — Coming Soon, Via MUBI
There are some actors out there, talented as hell, but they follow the same predictable path, picking the same safe roles in hopes of becoming a household name. Then there are actors who choose to travel the roads less traveled, immersing themselves in a variety of characters far from their own personality. Caleb Landry Jones is one such actor, someone who makes bold choices in films like Get Out, Heaven Knows What, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Nitram. While he may not be a household name, he's certainly a talent who continues to surprise us with each film he takes on. Harvest, his latest film, is no exception.
Here, Landry Jones stars as a simple medieval villager in 14th-century England. Facing the threat of famine, the small town is visited by strangers from beyond the village borders. Their arrival sparks a series of events, leading to disorder and unrest among the local villagers. Fear of a devastating future compels Landry Jones’s character to take brash actions in an attempt to prevent the impending death and destruction he sees on the horizon.
Co-starring Harry Melling, Frank Dillane, Rosy McEwen, Grace Jabbari, Thalissa Teixeira, and Arinzé Kene, the film appears to be a revisionist take on the medieval period, blending elements of British folk horror with stylish themes of fear, superstition, and societal collapse. All the elements come together for what promises to be a fascinating tale of how human behavior is shaped during times of crisis and uncertainty.
Based on the novel of the same name by Jim Crace, Harvest is directed and co-written by acclaimed Greek filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg, Chevalier). The film is expected to open in international cinemas in May and July, followed by a streaming release in August on MUBI. As of now, a U.S. release date has not been announced.
“Sharp Corner” Trailer: Ben Foster Becomes a Reluctant Roadside Savior in Jason Buxton’s Suburban Psychological Thriller with Cobie Smulders — In Theaters May 9
Imagine living in a cozy home with your family, having worked your whole life to afford a nice house and beautiful children. Nothing could be better than that. Then, BOOOOM!—an unfortunate soul crashes their car right into your front yard. A few weeks later, another crash, this time with casualties, in the same spot. Then another one. Soon, you realize your house is becoming a prime location for accidents, and it’s no longer the peaceful home you once knew. Now you're just waiting for the next tragedy to drop.
Sharp Corner, a new offbeat psychological thriller starring Ben Foster and Cobie Smulders, explores this nightmarish scenario, diving into the psyche of a loving father who just wants his 'dream house' but instead finds himself caught in a spiral of fear, fate, and escalating trauma.
Based on the short story by Russell Wangersky and written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Jason Buxton (Blackbird), the film sees Ben Foster, known for his deeply nuanced performances of characters on the edge, once again playing a man whose grip on reality begins to unravel as he becomes increasingly obsessed with saving the lives of car accident victims. This obsession with being a savior causes him to pull away from his wife and children—the very people who need him the most.
The film marks Buxton’s second feature following his 2012 debut, the school shooting drama Blackbird, starring Connor Jessup.
Sharp Corner premiered last year at TIFF, earning strong reviews. The film is now slated to open in theaters on May 9th.
“Winter Spring Summer or Fall” Trailer: Jenna Ortega and Percy Hynes White Find Love Across the Seasons in New Teen Romance — In Theaters and on VOD April 25th
Jenna Ortega is keeping an incredibly busy schedule these days. When she’s not starring in major blockbusters like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice or her hit Netflix series Wednesday, she can be found in smaller films like Miller's Girl, The Fallout, and most recently Death of a Unicorn. It seems she likes to juggle her options, balancing big movies with smaller indie films to keep things fresh.
Well, Ortega must have somehow squeezed in some time to star in this teen romance drama, where she acts opposite her Wednesday co-star Percy Hynes White. And despite her penchant for picking roles as social misfits and nonconformists, this might be Ortega in her most innocent and seemingly normal role yet.
In Winter Spring Summer or Fall, Ortega plays Remi Aguilar, a senior high school student dreaming of attending Harvard after working her whole life to get good grades. However, those plans are thrown into disarray when she randomly meets Barnes (Percy Hynes White), a music-obsessed slacker who is determined to win her heart, no matter the odds.
With obvious nods to Say Anything and other teen romance films of that ilk, this appears to be trying hard to be a modern teen love story for a new generation. Directed by Tiffany Paulsen (writer of the Netflix rom-com Holidate) and written by Dan Schoffer (Hollidaysburg), the film also stars Marisol Nichols and Adam Rodriguez.
Winter Spring Summer or Fall is slated to be released in theaters and on VOD April 25th.
“Henry Johnson” Trailer: Shia LaBeouf Reprises His Acclaimed Stage Role in David Mamet’s Prison Drama – Limited Release Begins May 9th
Shia LaBeouf turned heads when he made his stage debut in 2023 in the prison-set play Henry Johnson. LaBeouf earned strong reviews for his tense performance, playing a prison cellmate who manipulates his friend and fellow inmate into doing his bidding in a scheme that ultimately benefits him.
The play was written and directed by award-winning playwright and filmmaker David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, American Buffalo, House of Games). Mamet, who hasn't helmed a feature film since 2008's jiu-jitsu drama Redbelt, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, has now turned the play into his latest film, marking his return to filmmaking after over 17 years. Like most of Mamet's works, the film is dialogue-heavy and character-driven, exploring the morality of men in all facets of their lives.
Henry Johnson also stars Evan Jonigkeit (The Night House), Chris Bauer (True Blood), and Dominic Hoffman (Redbelt), all reprising their roles from the stage production.
The film will have an exclusive limited release starting on May 9th. To see which cities the film will be screening in, it might be best to check the film's official website at henryjohnsonmovie.com for those details.
“California King” Trailer: Travis Bennett and Jimmy Tatro Botch a Fake Kidnapping in This Ridiculous Crime Comedy with Victoria Justice and Joel McHale – Out on April 25th
So, what's the best way to impress the girl of your dreams? Stage a fake kidnapping where you can come out on top as the hero she never knew she needed... Duh!
Rapper-DJ-actor Travis Bennett (Dave) and comic actor Jimmy Tatro (Theater Camp, American Vandal) play a couple of boneheads who decide the best way to win a girl's heart is by fake kidnapping her brother in this new crime comedy California King.
Their plan is so ridiculous that the only chance of it working flies straight out the window when it gets hijacked by a real, ruthless kidnapper (played by Joel McHale). Now, these numskulls must figure out how to retrieve the brother without getting caught … or worse, getting killed over it.
Victoria Justice co-stars as the dream girl Travis Bennett is trying to impress in order to get her to go on a date with him. Sadly, he never thought asking her out would be this complicated. Let alone that he would end up in a scheme so out of control it might cost him more than just his dignity.
Written and directed by Eli Stern, California King is being released on April 25th.
“Exterritorial” Trailer: Jeanne Goursaud Wages War Inside a U.S. Consulate in German Action Thriller with Dougray Scott – Starts Streaming April 30th on Netflix
Here's the thing with Netflix: as much as they're known for their emotionally powerful dramas (Adolescence), guilty pleasure reality shows (Love on the Spectrum), or straight-up junk blockbusters (The Electric State), sometimes you just want to plop down and flip on a kickass action film where the stakes are as high as the action is.
Enter: Exterritorial, a German actioner where we imagine the subtitles are mainly there to let you know the German word for, “Oh crap, my nose is broken … now my arm, arghh!”
Written and directed by German filmmaker Christian Zübert, the Netflix thriller stars German-French actress Jeanne Goursaud (Barbarians, The Chemistry of Death) as a former elite German soldier who is sent to the American consulate to apply for an H1 work visa. Little does she know, her son goes missing (or perhaps is taken just under her nose), and getting him back will require her to face off against a building full of US agents with no intention of helping her.
It has all the trappings of a classic ‘90s action film—stuck in a closed-off tower, a conspiracy yet to reveal itself, and a relentless pursuit for personal justice. And oh yeah, lest we forget, bone-snapping aplenty.
Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible 2, Batwoman) co-stars as a US agent working at the consulate who knows more than he's letting on.
Exterritorial is coming to Netflix on April 30th—prepare yourself for the type of foreign affairs we can all get behind, where some government officials get exactly what they deserve.
