"Thunderbolts" Super Bowl Trailer: Marvel’s Antiheroes Assemble for a World-Saving Mission, Starring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour
Bucky Barnes leads a dysfunctional team of antiheroes in this new Marvel action film.
A world without The Avengers is a world in grave peril. So, who will step up to save us from the next great threat? Well… it might not be the team you were expecting. In fact, they might just be the “worst group of people trying to work together.” But hey, they can punch and shoot—just don’t expect any of them to fly.
Check out the latest trailer for Marvel’s Thunderbolts, teased during the Super Bowl. The film asks a pressing question: What happens when the world’s only hope lies in the hands of a ragtag team of disgraced antiheroes who can’t stand each other and have never exactly been known for their selflessness? Well, they’re our best worst option. And because no one has a better idea… they’ll have to do.
Meet the Thunderbolts: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
Leading the team—or at least trying to—is Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), the reluctant super-soldier with a metal arm and a history of brainwashing. As a mysterious new threat emerges, Bucky must somehow whip this dysfunctional squad into shape before it’s too late.
Interestingly, the latest trailer is missing "Bob" (Lewis Pullman), a previously seen but still-mysterious character who was assumed to be part of the team. But now, it seems Bob might actually be the very threat the Thunderbolts are up against—a powerful, possibly flying villain with an unknown agenda. Rumor has it that the mysterious "Bob" character is actually Sentry, aka Robert "Bob" Reynolds. In the comics, Sentry possesses god-like superpowers derived from an advanced super-soldier serum that alters his molecular structure, making him one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe.
Overseeing the operation is the ever-scheming CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who originally spearheaded the Thunderbolts initiative. Though, judging by the chaos, this probably wasn’t what she had in mind. As the team’s government liaison, her actions may be linked to President Thunderbolt Ross’s new administration.
Directed by Jake Schreier (Beef, Paper Towns, Robot & Frank), Thunderbolts also reunites Schreier with Beef creator Lee Sung Jin, who co-writes the screenplay alongside Black Widow’s Eric Pearson and The Bear’s Joanna Calo.
Thunderbolts arrives in theaters on May 2.
