A Wedding Scheme Turns Complicated in Teaser for Upcoming Remake of Ang Lee's Classic "The Wedding Banquet," Starring Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, and Han Gi-chan
"Fire Island" Director Andrew Ahn reimagines Ang Lee's 1993 wedding-sham classic with a fresh twist, exploring love, family, and identity.
To help out a closeted gay Asian man, his lesbian roommate agrees to marry him in order to secure a U.S. green card, while also appeasing his conservative Korean grandmother. Unaware of her grandson's sexuality, the grandmother also doesn’t know that he is currently living with his gay boyfriend—and that the impending marriage is nothing more than a carefully constructed sham. If that sounds a little familiar, it’s because this is a modern remake of the 1993 indie rom-com The Wedding Banquet, which helped launch the career of filmmaker Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). The film became an award-winning festival hit and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film that year.
This time, the story has been reimagined to feature two gay couples living in the same house: a lesbian couple and a gay couple, all roommates and best friends. They’ve all agreed to carry out the wedding scam in exchange for a green card, while the lesbian couple is also seeking money to fund another round of IVF treatments, as they desperately want to start a family together.
Current SNL cast member Bowen Yang stars alongside Korean actor Han Gi-chan (Where Your Eyes Linger) as the gay couple, Chris and Min, while Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Oscar-nominee Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) play the lesbian couple, Angela and Lee.
It's Min and Angela who are attempting to tie the knot, as Min's student visa is about to expire. However, their wedding facade spirals out of control when Min's grandmother hears about it and expects a full-blown traditional wedding ceremony with all the trimmings. As the lie grows bigger each day, they are faced with the choice of either coming clean or going through with the plan, hoping nothing will go wrong.
Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung, of Minari fame, costars as the sweet, oblivious Korean grandmother. The cast also includes Joan Chen (Twin Peaks, The Last Emperor) as Kelly Marie Tran's mother.
The Wedding Banquet is directed by Andrew Ahn, best known for directing the Hulu gay-centric comedy Fire Island. He also co-wrote the screenplay with producer James Schamus, Ang Lee's long-time frequent producing and writing partner who also co-wrote the original 1993 film.
The Wedding Banquet is currently premiering at Sundance this week, but is slated to open in theaters on April 18th, courtesy of Bleecker Street. Watch the newly-released teaser, above.
