Emily Bett Rickards Stars as Mildred Burke, a Trailblazing Professional Female Wrestler Who Defied the Odds in the 1930s, Co-starring Josh Lucas, Walton Goggins, and Gavin Casalegno
Do you fancy yourself a wrestling fan? Are professional female wrestlers more your thing, you say? Well, here’s a film you might want to keep in mind as it dives into the world of professional female wrestling. It’s a historical sports drama that tells the untold story of a real-life groundbreaker. Watch the trailer for this upcoming film, above, but prepare to have your senses headlocked in a tight grip.
The Queen of the Ring, a new 1930s wrestling indie drama starring Emily Bett Rickards and Yellowstone's Josh Lucas, alongside Emmy-nominee Walton Goggins (Justified, Fallout), tells the inspirational true story of Mildred Burke, one of the first professional female wrestlers. She broke the glass ceiling and paved the way for women to be included in the wrestling industry, during an era where it was illegal for women to participate in such sports. At the height of her fame, Burke became the highest paid female athlete ... in the world.
Emily Bett Rickards gets to flex both her muscles and her dramatic chops as she stars as Mildred Burke in the upcoming drama. Bett Rickards is perhaps best known for portraying tech whiz Felicity Smoak, who became Oliver Queen's love interest on the popular CW DC superhero series Arrow. She also starred last year as folk gunslinger hero Calamity Jane in the Tubi original western film, where she reunited with Arrow star Stephen Amell as Wild Bill Hickok.
Here, Emily Bett Rickards delivers what seems to be a poignant performance as a young Mildred Burke, a single mother from a small Kansas town who, with the full support of her son, enters the male-dominated world of professional wrestling. She leads the way in bringing more women into the sport, defying the social norms of her time and challenging expectations of what a woman could achieve in a traditionally male field.
Based on the book "The Queen of the Ring" by Jeff Leen, the film is produced, written, and directed by indie filmmaker Ash Avildsen (Paradise City, American Satan).
The cast also features Josh Lucas as Billy Wolfe, a professional wrestling promoter who became the husband and manager of Mildred Burke. Together, they ran a traveling troupe of women wrestlers during the 1930s and 40s. Their marriage and business together ultimately became extremely turbulent as they fought over the direction of her career.
Walton Goggins takes on the role of pioneering wrestling promoter Jack Pfefer who, in the film, is shown to be a major supporter of Mildred's activist push for more female wrestlers.
Gavin Casalegno (The Summer I Turned Pretty) costars as Mildred Burke's teenage son, Joe.
Others in the cast include Tyler Posey, Francesca Eastwood, Marie Avgeropolous, Deborah Ann Woll, Cara Buono, Kelli Berglund, Damaris Lewis, and Adam Demos, with Karate Kid's Martin Kove and real-life wrestlers Kailey "Kamille" Latimer and Toni "Storm" Rossall.
The Queen of the Ring is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 7th.
