"The Four Seasons" Trailer: Tina Fey’s New Netflix Comedy Series Explores Friendship, Midlife Crises, and Vacation Drama with Steve Carell, Will Forte and Colman Domingo
In this heartfelt comedy, a group of longtime friends navigates marital drama and midlife revelations on four getaway trips, led by Fey and a star-studded cast including Carell, Forte, and Domingo.
Who wouldn't want to spend a lavish vacation with their closest friends? Dining in exotic locales, sharing joyful conversations over expertly prepared meals with friends and their spouses—it sounds like a dream. But after watching the latest season of The White Lotus, you might think twice.
Now, Tina Fey’s newest Netflix series The Four Seasons doesn’t go as dark as The White Lotus, but it does prove that vacationing with even your dearest friends comes with its own highs, lows, and a fair amount of emotional baggage. Because nothing says friendship like a little communal awkwardness, a touch of marital drama, and the occasional heart-to-heart that makes you wonder if you’re in paradise—or just trapped in a beautifully chaotic mess with longtime pals.
Co-created by Fey alongside Never Have I Ever co-creator Lang Fisher and Great News creator Tracey Wigfield, this new comedy series brings together a stellar ensemble, including Will Forte, Steve Carell, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Marco Calvani, and recent Oscar nominee Colman Domingo.
Fey has clearly chosen a group of powerhouse talents to surround herself with as she plays one of the vacationing friends. The series revolves around three couples, the closest of chums, who have agreed to go on four different vacation trips together, one for each season of the year.
As they’ve reached a certain age in their lives where the thought of retirement isn’t as far off as it once was, they are hoping these picture-perfect getaways will be a chance to relax, reconnect, and make lasting memories. But, of course, nothing ever goes quite as planned, especially when one couple within the group shows signs of crumbling under the weight of a looming divorce. Chalk it up to a simple case of midlife crisis blues.
The Netflix series is based on the 1981 comedy of the same name starring Alan Alda and Carol Burnett. While the original film dealt with the existential anxieties of the Baby Boomer generation, this remake series shifts the focus to Gen X, exploring their own midlife crises, frustrations, and the lingering question of whether they’ve truly figured life out—or if they ever really will. Maybe the answers are waiting at Burning Man?
Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the acclaimed wife-husband directing team best known for the Harvey Pekar biopic American Splendor, and more recently for helming episodes of Only Murders in the Building and Succession, are directing the first two episodes.
Meanwhile, Colman Domingo (one of the busiest actors working today) steps behind the camera to direct an episode as well. Domingo, who previously helmed three episodes of his former show Fear the Walking Dead, is also currently developing a Nat King Cole biopic in which he’ll both star and direct.
Co-starring Erika Henningsen and Julia Lester, with Alan Alda making a special appearance, The Four Seasons is set to premiere Thursday, May 1st, only on Netflix.
So, prepare for some hearty laughs, a heavy dose of midlife revelations, and a vacation you won’t need a passport to enjoy … just a Netflix subscription.
