"Superman" Extended Sneak Peek: Watch David Corenswet as a Vulnerable Man of Steel With His Dog in New Preview for James Gunn’s Playful Yet Powerful Take on the DC Superhero
David Corenswet stars as the iconic superhero in a fresh take on the Man of Steel, balancing action, humor, and vulnerability in Gunn’s exciting new DC universe introduction.
One of the most anticipated movies of this summer is, without a doubt, James Gunn's new Superman movie. Since the announcement of Gunn taking creative control over the DC film franchise as co-CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios, as well as launching his new version of Superman, fans have been clamoring for sneak peeks to give a taste of what this new DC world will look like.
What's the vibe? What's the feel? What type of superhero film will it be: seriously dark and somber, light and campy, or more nostalgic? After all, Gunn's new Superman movie essentially serves as the first introduction to Gunn's vision of the greater DC universe. It will likely set the barometer for understanding what Gunn is going for with this new DCEU.
Well, they released a new extended sneak peek running just under five minutes, during which Superman (played by David Corenswet) is lying in a soft pile of snow, wheezing blood from his mouth with a nasty scratch near his left eye, cheekbone, and forehead… a pretty brutal scrape. Perhaps he got himself into a rough fight with a giant alien creature of some kind? Or maybe it was the doing of a villain we haven’t seen just yet?
Superman whistles for his dog, Krypto. Like the loyal pooch that he is, Krypto drags him to safety, though not before a little playful moment with his owner. Krypto might be loyal, but he doesn’t catch on quickly. Superman is in no condition to play with his dog, let alone help himself back up on his feet. With his red cape clenched between his jaws, Krypto drags Superman back “home.”
From the icy landscape emerges a large, towering laboratory made of long, glistening icy crystals rising from beneath the ground. It’s the Fortress of Solitude. And out comes a team of Kryptonian robots, one with the voice of Alan Tudyk. They lift Superman to take him from the front entrance to the inside and prepare him for a process to heal him back to health. After suffering 14 fractured bones and a number of injuries—including damage to his bladder, kidneys, large intestines, and lungs—Superman is blasted with a large dose of yellow sun, straight into his body. He screams in agony before the image fades into a blinding bright light, then cuts to a trailer sequence that we've seen before.
This new sneak peek is exactly what one might come to expect from Gunn's version of Superman. It's playful and wholesome, perhaps a tad too sentimental at times. The dialogue is somewhat witty, but the visuals are quite impressive. The idea of showing a Superman who is not impervious to injuries might come off as a radical approach, but it adds a level of stakes to the film, making the character feel more vulnerable and human.
Hell, color us excited! Not that we weren't before. But here's the real question: Is there enough excitement for this new Superman movie to dominate the box office this summer, especially with Marvel's Fantastic Four coming out in the same month, just weeks apart? Or will Superman end up battered and bruised at the box office—now that would be a metaphor no one wants, unless you're Marvel, of course.
Costarring alongside David Corenswet as Clark Kent aka Superman is Emmy-winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as intrepid Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult (Nosferatu) takes on the bald-headed billionaire Lex Luthor, Superman's arch-nemesis.
The film will also feature a ton of supporting turns and cameos, including Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce (Suits) as Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White, Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus) as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi (The Blacklist: Redemption) as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, and the list goes on.
Superman will be soaring into theaters July 11, so get ready for a super heroic summer!
