"Snow White" New Trailer: Rachel Zegler Whistles While She Works in Disney's New Live-Action Musical Remake
Can Disney’s live-action Snow White remake win over audiences like "Wicked" did?
Let’s not beat around the bush. Since the early announcement of Disney’s live-action remake of their classic 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, there has been plenty of brouhaha surrounding every stage of its production. From the casting of Snow White and the Evil Queen to the depiction of computer-generated Seven Dwarfs, it seems everyone has something to say about this movie—even though it won’t be released until March. And to be honest, the overwhelming negative chatter leading up to its debut didn’t look good for the film’s prospects.
If you had asked us six months ago, when the first Snow White teaser trailer was released, we would have thought the film was destined to be an unmitigated box office disaster. But then something happened in November that may have changed Snow White’s trajectory: Wicked happened.
Released last November with a similar level of skepticism, Wicked not only became a box office juggernaut but also ended up scoring ten Oscar nominations. It even managed to win over audiences who don’t typically embrace wildly flamboyant fantasy musicals.
Now, we’re not saying this new Snow White movie will match Wicked’s success, but Wicked’s triumph proved there’s an audience hunger for these kinds of large-scale, musical-driven fantasy films. That leaves an opening—one that Snow White could step into.
The future of Snow White might have looked grim just a few months ago. And let’s be real—it still might. But its chances are better now than they were before.
With that in mind, Disney is moving full steam ahead with its Snow White promotional campaign, now fully embracing the film’s musical showmanship—colors and all. The studio has just released a new minute-long trailer, dubbing it “the magical movie event.” The preview also offers a glimpse of Rachel Zegler’s Snow White singing a new rendition of the classic song Whistle While You Work.
With Wicked fever still lingering in audiences’ minds, could this new live-action Snow White movie catch a bit of that musical infection? If only we had a magic mirror on the wall to tell us if it will be the fairest musical of them all.
Directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Snow White opens nationwide on March 21. Watch the new trailer, above.
