The Smurfs are back with a brand-new Smurf-tacular movie, and it’s going to be the Smurfiest thing to ever Smurf your Smurf-loving mind! So, grab a big Smurf-tub of popcorn and get ready to Smurf out until you can’t Smurf anymore! It’s going to be one Smurf-ed up summer!
Here’s the official trailer for Smurfs, the newest installment in The Smurfs film series, based on the classic 1960s Belgian comic series created by artist Peyo, which was famously adapted into a beloved 1980s cartoon show produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.
Touting pop star Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette, Smurfs serves as a reboot of the Smurf cinematic universe. So, don’t feel pressured to catch up on the previous Smurf films—however many there are. Who’s counting?
This is a fresh take on the franchise, despite feeling so familiar: When Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) is kidnapped by Gargamel and his equally evil wizard brother Razamel, the Smurfs must leave the safety of their animated world and leap into the real world—Paris, France. Incroyable! There, the Smurfs discover a new clan of Smurfs led by Papa Smurf’s long-lost brother (voiced by Nick Offerman) and team up to take down Gargamel and Razamel to rescue Papa Smurf from their clutches.
This new CG-animated, live-action hybrid musical is directed by animator Chris Miller, best known for helming Puss in Boots and Shrek the Third.
Meanwhile, comedy writer Pam Brady penned the screenplay. Brady is known for her collaborations with Trey Parker and Matt Stone on South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and Team America: World Police. She also wrote the cult Lonely Island comedy Hot Rod and recently co-wrote Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

To save their world, they must come to ours... When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is mysteriously taken by the evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.
Smurfs features an all-star voice cast, including Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, with Kurt Russell and John Goodman.
Smurfs is coming to theaters this summer, beginning July 18.
