Kate Hudson Takes Over the Family Basketball Business in Netflix's New Sports Comedy Series "Running Point" — Watch the Trailer
Exec. producers Mindy Kaling and Ike Barinholtz bring a new Netflix sports comedy as Kate Hudson steps into the male-dominated world of pro basketball.
Kate Hudson is a chip off the old block. With every project she takes on, she keeps reminding us how much she’s like her mother, from her comedic timing and charisma to her beauty and the roles she chooses. For instance, Hudson stars in Running Point, a new Netflix comedy series coming out next month, where she plays the daughter of a wealthy and dysfunctional basketball family. She’s been tasked with becoming the next president of the Los Angeles Waves, a professional basketball team with a storied history of winning—but this season, they’re not doing so well. It’s been a hard season for the team, with a losing streak and all. Hudson's character enters a mostly male-dominated sports world, where she isn’t always taken seriously, sometimes even by her own players. So, she has a lot to prove—not only for herself but for the legacy of her family as well.
Now, we can't help but feel that this is a role Hudson's mother, Goldie Hawn, would have agreed to play. In fact, if you switch the game of professional basketball with high school football, Hawn starred in a similar sports comedy, 1986's Wildcats. Hawn played the daughter of a famed football coach who is given the chance to coach an inner-city Chicago high school football team. With wit and determination, she is able to turn the team around, despite initial opposition from her players and fellow male coaches.
But hey, we're not saying Kate Hudson is merely lifting things off her mother's playbook. We're just remarking on how much Kate and Goldie are alike. And there's got to be a future project down the line somewhere where they can both share the screen together, right?
Running Point is co-created and co-executive produced by Mindy Kaling alongside comedian-comedy writer Ike Barinholtz, and television producers-writers Elaine Ko (Only Murders in the Building) and David Stassen (The Mindy Project).
The show also stars Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Jay Ellis, Toby Sandeman, Max Greenfield, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada, and Dane DiLiegro, with "White Boy Summer" rapper Chet Hanks as one of the Los Angeles Waves ball players and Justin Theroux as Hudson's older brother who's forced to resign as the Waves president, offering the job to his sister.
Here's the official synopsis for the 10-episode series:
When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job. From the hitmaking team of Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, Running Point puts a bold twist on the underdog comedy.
Director James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, Daisy Jones & the Six, Shrinking) helms the first two episodes.
Running Point is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, February 27th, only on Netflix. Watch the trailer, above.
