"Revelations" Trailer: 'Train to Busan' Director Yeon Sang-ho Explores Faith and Fear in New Netflix Korean Horror, Exec. Produced By Alfonso Cuarón
South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho delivers a chilling new horror thriller, Revelations, with Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuarón onboard as executive producer.
With all the buzz surrounding Oscar-winner Bong Joon Ho lately—and for good reason; he's a phenomenal filmmaker—one might assume he's the only noteworthy cinematic voice emerging from South Korea these days. Not true at all. Yeon Sang-ho, the South Korean filmmaker behind the hit zombie thriller Train to Busan, may not have the same global recognition as Bong, but since breaking through, he has undeniably become a prolific auteur, seamlessly crossing between film, television, and various other mediums.
Since Train to Busan, Yeon wrote and directed its animated prequel, Seoul Station, in 2016 and expanded the franchise with the 2020 standalone sequel Peninsula. Beyond zombies, he has ventured into other genres, including the 2018 film Psychokinesis, billed as South Korea's first superhero movie, and the sci-fi action thriller Jung_E, a Netflix exclusive.
In fact, Yeon has built a strong creative partnership with Netflix, spending the last four years bringing Korean-language horror projects to the streamer. His recent works include two seasons of the webtoon-based supernatural thriller Hellbound and the manga-based alien horror miniseries Parasyte: The Grey. Now, never one to slow down, the Train to Busan director is back this week with yet another Netflix Korean exclusive, Revelations.
A chilling new horror feature, Revelations explores faith, spirituality, and the ghosts we fear—both literal and metaphorical.
Starring Ryu Jun-yeol (The 8 Show), Shin Hyun-been (Hospital Playlist), and Shin Min-jae (Jung_E), the film follows a pastor who believes he’s on a divine mission to punish the person responsible for a missing-person case, while a detective working the same case is haunted by visions of her dead sister—each chasing their own version of the truth.
What makes Yeon’s latest project even more intriguing is that Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men) has signed on as an executive producer, marking their first collaboration.
Cuarón expressed his admiration for Yeon in a recent press release:
"I became aware of director Yeon’s work when King of Pigs was presented in Cannes, and I started following his work after. Then, when I saw Train to Busan, I was blown away because it’s one of those perfect films. I was excited ever since about the possibility of meeting him and collaborating with him."
Revelations debuts this Friday, March 21, exclusively on Netflix.
