"Poker Face: Season 2" Trailer: Natasha Lyonne Returns for More Whodunnit Mysteries with More Big-Name Guest Stars
In this second season, Lyonne’s Charlie Cale faces new lies, new mysteries, and even more big-name guest stars as she continues to outwit the most devious criminals with her human lie detector skills.
Are you on the hunt for a television show packed with whodunnit mysteries and more big-name guest stars than you can keep track of? Well, maybe Poker Face is just what you're looking for. It's been described, rather accurately, as a contemporary take on classic detective TV shows like Columbo and Murder, She Wrote. The common thread you’ll find in these genre shows is a seemingly unassuming protagonist, a detective of sorts, who is always at the center of a puzzling, unsolved crime—most likely a new mystery with each episode. This sleuth consistently manages to outwit those around them and always gets to the truth, no matter how tangled the web may be.
In Poker Face, a Peacock streaming original, Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll, Orange Is the New Black) takes on the role of the unassuming protagonist—one could say she’s the Columbo for this generation, minus the beige coat and glass eye, of course. Lyonne plays Charlie Cale, a sassy, whip-smart cocktail waitress who drives a vintage Plymouth Barracuda and often finds herself tangled up in a murder or theft case or two.
With shows like this, there needs to be a hook. And Charlie's hook is that she can always tell whenever someone is lying to her. She's a human lie detector. It's both a gift and a curse. And her special little ability always seems to put her in situations where she has no choice but to get involved.
Created by filmmaker Rian Johnson, who put his spin on the Agatha Christie whodunit trope with his wildly successful Knives Out film franchise, the series has attracted some pretty big-name actors to make appearances in the first season, and Season 2 is no exception.
Lyonne, who not only stars but also serves as an executive producer and will direct a couple of episodes in Season 2, returns for another round of mysteries. This time, Charlie will come across various oddball characters, some of whom are trying to cheat their way through life, setting the stage for even more unpredictable twists and turns in her pursuit of truth. So, it's a good thing Charlie hasn’t met a person yet who can lie to her face and get away with it. And it’s a good thing Charlie hasn't yet tackled a mystery she couldn't solve.
Joining Lyonne in this new season are some pretty impressive names playing the “unusual suspects.” They include Cynthia Erivo, Katie Holmes, Giancarlo Esposito, Awkwafina, Clifford “Method Man” Smith, Justin Theroux, Taylor Schilling, Kumail Nanjiani, John Mulaney, John Cho, Simon Rex, David Alan Grier, and Melanie Lynskey, among others.
So, if you need your mysterious cravings satisfied with a star-studded twist, Poker Face is here to deliver. The series is set to return with Season 2 on Thursday, May 8th, on Peacock.
