"On Swift Horses" Trailer: Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi Star in New Provocative Period Drama of Love and Temptation with Will Poulter and Diego Calva
The 1950s-set road film explores forbidden desires and high-stakes passion, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter, Diego Calva, and Sasha Calle.
Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters, Normal People) and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn, Priscilla) are two of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars, so anytime they headline the same film, you know it’s bound to generate a good amount of buzz. On Swift Horses is a new steamy period road drama that not only features Edgar-Jones and Elordi in the lead roles but also sees them exploring different sides of their sexualities—something sure to have people talking until its release in April.
Also starring Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Bear) and Diego Calva (Babylon, Narcos: Mexico), the film follows a 1950s Midwestern American couple, Muriel and Lee (Edgar-Jones and Poulter), as they plan to pack up their things and move to the sun-drenched hills of California. Their plans, however, are thrown off course when Lee's free-spirited, freewheeling brother, Julius (Elordi), suddenly joins them after completing a stint in the Navy.
The trio sets off for California, but not before stopping in the newly booming gambling city of Las Vegas—a place where everyone can cut loose at racetracks and casinos and free themselves from their inhibitions. That’s exactly what happens when Julius meets and falls for a charming but elusive card cheat named Henry (Calva), while Muriel strikes up relationships with a few classy, open-minded women, discovering a sensual side of herself she never knew existed. But as secrets unravel, Muriel and Julius find themselves drawn to each other, forming a dangerous, forbidden bond.
Co-starring Sasha Calle (The Flash) and singer-actress Kat Cunning, the upcoming film is directed by Emmy-winning television helmer Daniel Minahan, known for Deadwood: The Movie as well as episodes of The Assassination of Gianni Versace, House of Cards, and Halston.
Bryce Kass, who penned the 2018 Lizzie Borden biopic Lizzie starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, wrote the adapted screenplay for On Swift Horses, which is based on the critically acclaimed novel (see picture below) of the same name by author Shannon Pufahl.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Muriel and her husband Lee are beginning a bright new life in California after his return from the Korean War. But their newfound stability is upended by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic brother, Julius, a wayward gambler with a secret past. A dangerous love triangle quickly forms. When Julius takes off in search of the young card cheat he’s fallen for, Muriel’s longing for something more propels her into a secret life of her own, gambling on racehorses and exploring a love she never dreamed possible.
On Swift Horses has been selected as the closing film for the SXSW Film Festival, which kicks off in early March.
The film is scheduled to open in theaters on April 25th via Sony Pictures Classics, following its SXSW debut. Watch the trailer above.
