Noah Wyle Leads a Frontline Medical Team in HBO MAX's New Doctor Series "The Pitt," Addressing America's Healthcare Crisis. Watch the Trailer!
Sure, it might seem similar to the hit 1990s medical drama that also starred Noah Wyle as an ER doctor, but "The Pitt," a new intense medical drama series for HBO MAX, aims to make it clear that this is nothing like "E.R." Unlike his "E.R." character, Dr. John Carter, who was a young, idealistic doctor eager for years of knowledge and training, Noah Wyle now plays Dr. Michael Robinavitch, a battle-hardened, cantankerous veteran doctor tasked with mentoring young physicians as they navigate some of the most challenging and devastating medical cases.
Set in a contemporary hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, "The Pitt" explores the realistic struggles and complexities faced by healthcare workers in modern America, focusing on a frontline medical team. So, in other words, it's a modern-day "E.R." — just don't tell the Michael Crichton estate (Crichton being the original creator of the now-classic NBC show), who are actively seeking to sue Warner Bros. Television. The studio insists, however, that it is "a completely different show" from "E.R." Here's one thing that makes it different: "The Pitt" will consist of 15 episodes, with each episode representing one hour of a full workday in the E.R. department. Essentially, the show is shot in real time over the course of a 15-hour period, where doctors, both young and old, inexperienced and experienced, struggle to make it to the end of their shift.
Nevertheless, Noah Wyle reunites with "E.R." executive producer John Wells (again, just a coincidence) as he leads a strong ensemble cast that includes Shawn Hatosy, Tracey Ifeachor, Patrick Marron Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and Katherine LaNasa.
Created by veteran television producer and writer R. Scott Gemmill ("E.R.," "NCIS: Los Angeles"), "The Pitt" is scheduled to debut on January 9th on HBO MAX. The show will arrive at a time when the national conversation about the corruption and cruelty of the American healthcare system has begun to intensify due to unfortunate events.
