“The Long Long Night” Trailer: Mark Duplass and Barret O'Brien Face a Midlife Crisis in This Lo-Fi Buddy-Comedy Series — Streaming April 28th on Kinema
Filmmaker/actor Mark Duplass takes midlife crisis to a whole new level of buffoonery in this new lo-fi comedy series The Long Long Night.
Consisting of six episodes, the comedy, shot on a minimal budget with a run-and-gun aesthetic, follows two lifelong best friends, played by series creators Mark Duplass and Barret O'Brien (Above the Trees), as they face an existential crisis following a personal tragedy. Their friendship is put to the test as they struggle to find purpose in their lives, while reaching an age where they feel they should have had it all figured out by now.
Known for experimenting with DIY shooting styles and exploring various distribution avenues, Duplass Brothers Productions presents The Long Long Night as the first TV series to debut on the Kinema platform. It will be available to stream on Kinema starting on Monday, April 28th.
So, what is Kinema?
It’s a newly minted distribution platform that allows filmmakers to host their own non-theatrical exhibitions and online screenings. Kinema also helps indie filmmakers build a community around their films (or shows) with the goal of selling tickets to both online and offline screening events.
You can read up about Kinema here: kinema.com
The Long Long Night has also launched a crowdfunding campaign on the new site Seed & Spark, proving that the Duplass Brothers are once again leading the way in finding innovative ways to finance and distribute films and shows, all in support of building a stronger indie film community.
“The Rehearsal” Season 2 Trailer: Nathan Fielder Pushes the Limits of Absurdity with a Staged Plane Crash in His Deadpan Docu-Comedy Series — Premieres April 20th on HBO and MAX
Nathan Fielder is a comedian. And a prankster. He’s a prank comedian so deadpan that most people won’t know when the joke begins or if there’s a joke at all. So, is Fielder a mad genius or just a master of confusion? Either way, he has turned some of the most excruciatingly awkward and convoluted “pranks” into an art form. To most, his elaborate staged stunts are so absurd that you might question their validity—and his own sanity.
Fielder returns with Season 2 of his head-scratching docu-comedy series The Rehearsal. This is where he sets up and hires ordinary people to perform staged reenactments that blur the line between insanity, absurdity, and reality.
This season, Fielder is going to stage highly detailed role-playing scenarios for the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), including a perfectly detailed plane crash disaster site that would make any Hollywood director green with envy. But why, you ask? Well, perhaps this time, the joke is on us. Because we don’t have a damn clue.
The Rehearsal: Season 2 premieres on HBO and MAX on Sunday, April 20th. So, prepare to be... well, you never really know with Fielder. Prepare for the unexpected and expect to be uncomfortable in the best possible way.
“The Eternaut” Trailer: Argentine Star Ricardo Darín Battles a Toxic Winter in This New Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Thriller Series — Premieres on Netflix April 30th
A part of Netflix’s success is that they have become a solid hub for foreign exports, with hits like Money Heist (Spain), Squid Game (South Korea), Adolescence (U.K.), Society of the Snow (Spain/Uruguay), Troll (Norway), and the list goes on.
Well, this just might be Netflix’s next big foreign hit, as it has all the makings of a global smash. With a high-concept story set in a post-apocalyptic world caused by a catastrophic toxic winter, The Eternaut, a limited Spanish-language series, is based on the classic 1950s Argentine sci-fi graphic novel by Héctor Germán Oesterheld, illustrated by Francisco Solano López with a 1969 remake drawn by Alberto Breccia (see images below).
The show also stars one of Argentina's biggest actors, Ricardo Darín (The Secret in Their Eyes, Argentina 1985, Nine Queens), playing a gas mask-wearing survivor who struggles through an icy, post-apocalyptic landscape where the open air has become poisonous to breathe. He soon rallies a group of survivors, leading a resistance against an unseen threat that may very well be of extraterrestrial origin.
Created and directed by Bruno Stagnaro (Okupas) and co-written by Stagnaro and writer-actor Ariel Staltari (Un Gallo para Esculapio), this one looks like it’s primed to captivate audiences across the globe when it debuts on Wednesday, April 30th on Netflix.
Anyone into post-apocalyptic survival stories, a la The Last of Us and Fallout, may want to mark their calendars for this one—it just might be the next buzzworthy show in the genre.
“Sherlock & Daughter” Trailer: David Thewlis Stars as Sherlock Holmes Unraveling a Conspiracy with His Long-Lost Daughter (Blu Hunt) — Premieres April 16th on The CW
We have seen countless iterations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s long-revered mystery-solving detective character, Sherlock Holmes. We have seen a young Sherlock, an old Sherlock, an ass-kicking Sherlock, a modern-day Sherlock, a drug-addicted, recovering Sherlock, a brotherly Sherlock … okay, you get the point, there have been a lot of damn Sherlocks. So, here’s another Sherlock to throw into that pile: the fatherly Sherlock!
In Sherlock & Daughter, a new CW mystery-adventure series, David Thewlis (Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, Anomalisa) steps into the shoes of Sherlock Holmes, who is confronted by a young woman from America claiming to be his long-lost daughter. And now, she wants him to solve the murder of her mother.
Blu Hunt (The New Mutants) stars opposite Thewlis as Amelia Rojas, a Native-American woman who travels across the ocean to 221B Baker Street to find the father she never knew and convince him to take on her case. But despite Sherlock’s denial of being her father, Amelia soon partners with him as they investigate a conspiracy involving Sherlock’s nemesis, Professor Moriarty, played by Dougray Scott.
Created and written by Brendan Foley and directed by Bryn Higgins, this eight-episode period drama premieres Wednesday, April 16th on the CW, with new episodes to follow. So, the game's afoot! But not before Sherlock gets in touch with his parental instincts.
