Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid’s Relationship Takes a Twisted Turn in New "Companion" Trailer
Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid Star in a Twisted Love Story Filled with Blood, Betrayal, and Dark Secrets!
At first, you might think this new full trailer for Companion gives away too much. The first images we see are of Sophie Thatcher, from Showtime's Yellowjackets, playing Iris, a young, beautiful woman strolling down an aisle of a grocery store, pushing a basket of groceries. She narrates, "There have been two moments in my life when I was happiest. The first was the day I met Josh. And the second... the day I killed him." Now, this is where you might think, "Okay, slow down here... do we really need to give away everything right now?" But we assure you, after watching the entire trailer, you’ll realize that’s only the beginning, and you’ll be left wondering, "What the hell is going on here?"
In this new twisted love story, Jack Quaid, from Amazon's The Boys, plays Josh, the aforementioned "good guy" whose future doesn’t look so bright. Judging by the trailer, Josh meets Iris in a grocery store, and they seem to hit it off. But soon, both of them find themselves trapped in an extremely toxic relationship. It appears Josh prefers Iris to be more obedient and domesticated, while Iris is beginning to realize just how liberated she truly is—to the point where she starts making some drastic decisions. Then come the unsettling images: Iris strapped down to a chair, fully caked in blood, with another scene where Josh pulls out a gun and pointing it at her head. There’s also a quick mention of a sex bot. Well, we did say this is a twisted love story. Or, as one critic puts it in this new trailer, "Deliciously Wicked."
Drew Hancock writes and directs the film. Best known as a television comedy writer, Hancock has worked on shows like Suburgatory, My Dead Ex, and Blue Mountain State. He also served as a segment director for Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the 2008 Spike Video Game Awards, and the 2007 sketch show Acceptable TV. Companion marks his feature directorial debut.
Zach Cregger, the writer-director of the 2022 breakout horror Barbarian, serves as a producer on this film alongside producer Roy Lee and his producing partner Raphael Margules, the same producing team behind Barbarian.
Cregger, who started out as a comedian and sketch performer with the troupe The Whitest Kids U' Know, knows a thing or two about transitioning from comedy to horror. We’re sure he was able to offer some sound advice to Hancock on how to balance horror with a comedy background. After all, the structure is quite similar: there’s a setup, followed by anticipation, and then the punchline—but in horror, it’s the kill.
Joining Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, the cast of Companion also includes Lukas Gage (The White Lotus: Season 1), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows), and Rupert Friend (Homeland).
Companion is due to open in theaters on January 31st, from the same studio that brought us The Notebook (as it hilariously referenced in the trailer for a comical effect).
