Robert Pattinson Plays a Clone Who Dies on the Job, Many Times, in Trailer for Bong Joon-ho's Dark Sci-Fi Comedy "Mickey 17" with Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, & Mark Ruffalo
"Batman" star Robert Pattinson takes on a unique role in the forthcoming darkly comic sci-fi flick "Mickey 17," where his job requires him to die... multiple times! In the first official trailer for Bong Joon-ho's latest madcap space epic, we see Pattinson as Mickey, a dispensable clone maintenance worker tasked with dying repeatedly as part of his unusual duties.
The film, based on the 2022 science-fiction novel "Mickey7" by Edward Ashton, is set in a dystopian future where humanity has colonized space. In this oppressive system ruled by incompetence aboard a spacecraft, low-ranking colonist Mickey Barnes (played by Robert Pattinson) signs up to be an "expendable" for the company. As a disposable maintenance worker, Mickey is assigned the most dangerous tasks. And if he dies on the job, the company simply clones him and brings him back to life.
Pattinson plays Mickey 17, the 17th clone. Things take a wild turn when Mickey 17 discovers he's not the only Mickey clone aboard the ship. With "multiples" being illegal, chaos ensues as Mickey 17 fights to stay alive, leading to a series of misadventures as he navigates this dangerous, clone-filled world.
"Mickey 17" marks the highly anticipated return of Oscar-winning Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, his first feature film in five years since the Oscar-winning "Parasite." And from the looks of it, Bong is once again diving into the sci-fi genre, reminiscent of his acclaimed 2013 train thriller "Snowpiercer," where he explored dystopian themes and darkly comic undertones.
Featuring a stellar supporting cast led by Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, "Mickey 17" is slated to open in theaters nationwide earlier next year, beginning January 31, 2025. Watch the trailer above.
