Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett Play Married Spies Entangled in Betrayal in Trailer for Steven Soderbergh's New Espionage Thriller "Black Bag"
Well, for a filmmaker who claimed to have retired years ago, Steven Soderbergh might just be one of the busiest directors in the business. Soderbergh not only has the unconventional haunted-house thriller Presence (shot entirely through the P.O.V. of a ghost) coming out in January, but also a few months later, he will be releasing a new twisty spy thriller, Black Bag, which, apparently, Soderbergh was able to squeeze out in record time.
Black Bag, for which an official trailer has been released, stars Michael Fassbender as an intelligence officer tasked with identifying a mole in his organization. So, who is this backstabbing spy who must have betrayed their country for large financial gain? Well, what do you know! The prime suspect is none other than Fassbender's own beloved wife, an equally skilled intelligence operative, played by Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett.
Fassbender has been on a recent winning streak of playing spies and undercover operatives. He's currently earning strong reviews for starring in the Showtime espionage thriller series The Agency. Fassbender also delivered a mesmerizing performance as a cool, calculated professional assassin in David Fincher's underappreciated hitman thriller The Killer. It seems Fassbender has found a new footing in the spy genre, where he excels in playing characters under intense pressure, all while keeping their emotions carefully concealed.
Soderbergh is once again working from a script penned by filmmaker David Koepp. The two recently collaborated on Presence as well as the 2020 techno thriller Kimi. Soderbergh also previously worked with Fassbender on the 2011 spy thriller "Haywire," which starred then-MMA star Gina Carano in her first major acting role.
Besides Fassbender and Blanchett, Black Bag features a stellar supporting cast, including Pierce Brosnan, Naomie Harris, Rege-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, and Tom Burke. The film is currently scheduled to open in theaters on March 14th. Watch the trailer above.
