Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista Face a Deadly Wasteland in New Post-Apocalyptic Action Fantasy - Watch the Trailer for "In the Lost Lands"
Milla Jovovich Plays a Sorceress on a Dangerous Quest in Paul W. S. Anderson’s New Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy Based on Short Story by George R. R. Martin
To be honest, Milla Jovovich doesn’t seem to get the credit she deserves for leading a hugely successful horror-action film series for nearly two decades with the Resident Evil franchise. While the films are based on a popular video game and feature the familiar zombie apocalypse theme, it’s Jovovich’s performance that has been the driving force behind the franchise's success. Let’s not sleep on that. But to be quite frank, those Resident Evil installments also left a lot to be desired. However, if we’ve learned anything from those movies, it’s that Jovovich feels right at home and formidable in a post-apocalyptic world teeming with soulless ghouls and wasteland warriors. So, it makes sense that we’re excited for a new peek at Jovovich’s latest horror-action film, which, yes, is directed by her husband, Paul W. S. Anderson, the filmmaker behind the Resident Evil films.
In the Lost Lands marks Jovovich's seventh collaboration with her husband, director Paul W. S. Anderson, following their last outing together with 2020's Monster Hunter, based on the classic Capcom video game. That film didn’t fare too well, though we’re sure there are some defenders of it. Now, it seems this husband-and-wife duo has ditched the video game adaptation route and turned to an old short story from Game of Thrones mastermind George R. R. Martin.
In this new action-fantasy adventure, Jovovich joins Dave Bautista in a post-apocalyptic world that blends elements of The Walking Dead, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Hellboy (and not the good one, but the one Jovovich co-starred in). Anderson, never one for subtlety, picks up visual influences from all over, creating a bizarre yet striking world that’s undeniably his own concoction that also at times feels heavily borrowed.
In the upcoming flick, Milla Jovovich plays Gray Alys, a mysterious sorceress fleeing a wasteland city controlled by zealot mercenaries. On a quest for a mythical treasure with unimaginable power, she must enlist the help of a “guide” to navigate a treacherous place known as The Lost Lands.
Dave Bautista takes on the “guide” role of Boyce, a drifter by nature who has allegedly survived the Lost Lands before, despite it being filled with deadly creatures, mindless ghouls, and demonic monsters. It’s also the last place where magic still exists—and apparently, where the magical treasure that Jovovich's character is searching for is hidden somewhere.
Joining Jovovich and Bautista in the cast are Arly Jover, Amara Okereke, Deirdre Mullins, Simon Loof, Fraser James, and Ian Hanmore. Paul W. S. Anderson directs from an adapted screenplay he co-wrote with filmmaker Constantin Werner.
In the Lost Lands is expected to arrive in theaters on March 7th.
On a side note, as mentioned before, the film is based on the short story by George R. R. Martin.
In the Lost Lands was published decades before Martin became a household name with his best-selling, award-winning A Song of Ice and Fire series, which would eventually be adapted into the hugely popular Game of Thrones TV series for HBO.
In the Lost Lands first appeared in the pages of the science fiction and fantasy magazine Fantasy & Science Fiction before being included in the 1987 paperback anthology Amazons II, a collection of short stories written by various fantasy and sci-fi writers (mostly female authors as the theme of the book was to feature female protagonists). While the book, Amazon II, is currently out of print, you can still find it on eBay and other online marketplaces.
