Epic Retelling of the Legend of David vs. Goliath — Watch the Trailer for Prime’s New Biblical Series “House of David,” starring Michael Iskander, Martyn Ford, Ali Suliman, and Stephen Lang
"Jesus Revolution" Director Jon Erwin directs Amazon Prime's new epic Biblical series with Michael Iskander as David, Martyn Ford as Goliath, Stephen Lang as Samuel and Ali Suliman as King Saul.
If you've noticed a surge in Biblical projects lately, you might be onto something and not imagining things. With the phenomenal success of The Chosen series, there seems to be a growing market for these epic Biblical tales. It appears the makers of these faith-based productions have found the right formula. Gone are the overly pious and milquetoast versions of the Bible—viewers now seem to want a more grounded and grittier understanding of these Biblical figures. And it doesn't hurt that the production values on these projects are now quite large and impressive.
This brings us to House of David, a new Prime original series that offers an epic retelling of the legend of David and Goliath. It tells the story of a young shepherd boy, armed merely with a sling and a stone, who courageously takes on and defeats a seemingly invincible Philistine giant in a battle of faith and wit, saving his people from certain defeat and oppression. The legend, of course, became ingrained in culture, evolving into a long-honored metaphor and fable about the underdog and fighting for what you believe in, no matter the odds.
This production comes from Christian filmmaker Jon Erwin (Jesus Revolution), working under his newly minted production company, The Wonder Project, which is dedicated to bringing faith-based projects to life. House of David is the first production from this new venture.
Featuring a cast that includes Ali Suliman (Jack Ryan, Arthur the King) as King Saul, Ayelet Zurer (Angels and Demons, Man of Steel) as Saul’s trusted wife Queen Ahinoam, Stephen Lang (Avatar franchise, Don’t Breathe) as Samuel, and Martyn Ford (Mortal Kombat 2, The Sandman) as Goliath, with rising actor Michael Iskander in the lead as David. Iskander was cast following a four-month international search and is fresh off his role in the Tony Award-winning musical Kimberly Akimbo.
Here's the official synopsis:
HOUSE OF DAVID tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king. As Saul loses his power over his kingdom, David finds himself on a journey to discover and fulfill his destiny, navigating love, loss, and violence in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace. As one leader falls, another must rise.
Jon Erwin directs. He also wrote the series with Jon Gunn (Ordinary Angels), based on Erwin's idea of retelling the biblical legend. Meanwhile, Dallas Jenkins, the creator and producer-director of The Chosen, is a shareholder and special advisor to Wonder Project. The show is a collaboration between Wonder Project, Amazon MGM Studios, Nomadic Pictures, Argonauts, Kingdom Story Company, and Lionsgate Television.
House of David is premiering on February 27th on Prime Video, with a three-episode launch; one episode will be released weekly thereafter. Watch the official trailer, above.
