Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding Face a Masked Valentine's Day Killer in New Trailer for Upcoming Slasher Horror "Heart Eyes"
Valentine's Day Turns Bloody as a Masked Killer Targets Couples in Director Josh Ruben’s New Slasher Thriller Starring Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding
Is anything sacred anymore? First, they turned Thanksgiving into a season for grisly murders, and now horror filmmakers have turned their attention to the most romantic day of the year—Valentine's Day. Once, it was a beautiful, romantic day to spend quality time with a loved one or the person you might want to spend the rest of your life with. But now, it might be the last day you see your loved one alive, as a serial killer is on the loose, hunting down unsuspecting lovers. Man, can we all just get along?
Here's the official full trailer for Heart Eyes, a new slasher horror thriller about a masked murderer who slays would-be couples on Valentine's Day. And yes! This movie is coming out just around Valentine's Day, a week before, perfectly timed to ruin your romantic plans.
Olivia Holt (from Freeform's Cruel Summer and Freeform/Marvel's Cloak & Dagger) and Mason Gooding (from the new Scream films) star as a couple who have the misfortune of being targeted by the elusive "Heart Eyes" killer, who has been terrorizing the nation with his random killings on Valentine's Day for years.
The film is riding a new slasher horror wave where holidays have become the new setting. We've seen numerous horror films set during Christmas, New Year's, of course, Halloween, and even a recent one set on Thanksgiving from horror guru Eli Roth. So, the natural progression would be a slasher set on Valentine's Day. What's next? Kwanzaa! Or perhaps, Happy Chanukah Day (in the voice of Smokey Robinson)?
Interestingly, Heart Eyes isn’t the first slasher to take place on Valentine's Day. The classic 1981 slasher My Bloody Valentine famously paved the way, featuring a pretty iconic slasher villain dressed in mining gear with a headlamp. His weapon of choice? A mining pickaxe. In contrast, the Heart Eyes killer sports a worn-out leather mask with heart-shaped eyes and wields a nasty, rusted machete. In either case, you definitely don’t want to be crossing paths with these killers, no matter what day it is.
Heart Eyes is directed by Josh Ruben, a former CollegeHumor sketch comedian and writer who gained recognition with the cult 2021 horror comedy Werewolves Within. He also wrote and directed the 2020 cabin-set horror comedy Scare Me. With this new slasher flick, backed by Sony Pictures, Ruben seems to be moving up in the horror genre, now fully embracing the new slasher craze.
Heart Eyes also co-stars Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, Devon Sawa, and Jordana Brewster. Filmmaker Christopher Landon, the director of the Happy Death Day franchise, serves as a producer. The film will be opening in theaters on February 7th.
