"G20" Trailer: Viola Davis Stars as U.S. President Fighting Terrorists in Amazon Prime's New Action Thriller with Antony Starr
Viola Davis stars as a combat-trained U.S. president battling terrorists at a global summit, with The Boys’ Antony Starr as the villain.
Each year, the G20 summit brings world leaders together to discuss and organize how to tackle pressing global issues. But with so many high-profile figures under one roof, it becomes a prime target for those looking to take advantage of the situation.
This sets the stage for the newly released trailer for Amazon’s upcoming action thriller G20, which imagines a group of armed terrorists seizing control of the summit in Cape Town, South Africa. As chaos unfolds, the U.S. President is forced to step up—not just as the leader of the free world, but as a fighter determined to protect the country’s closest allies. Luckily, she’s more than ready for the challenge.
Viola Davis is an Oscar winner (see: Fences), an Emmy winner (see: How to Get Away with Murder), and, as we’ve seen before, a certified screen badass (see: The Woman King). So, what a delight to see her letting loose, kicking ass, and taking names—as if she’s suddenly Captain America. Except Cap never had to pull off stunts like this while stuck wearing a red cocktail dress.
A throwback to President-in-Peril actioners like Air Force One, Olympus Has Fallen, and White House Down, G20 stars Davis as U.S. President Taylor Sutton, who finds herself at the center of an international crisis when terrorists attack the summit, led by a sadistic madman (played by Antony Starr—aka Homelander from Prime Video’s The Boys). Fortunately, Sutton has a military combat history, having fought in Fallujah years ago. Forced to tap into her inner Harrison Ford, she must fight her way to safety while simultaneously strategizing to protect her family and reclaim the summit.
Playing Viola Davis’s husband is Black-ish star Anthony Anderson, who, for the most part, spends his time taken hostage, strapped to a chair, and gagged. Meanwhile, a grown-up Marsai Martin (also from Black-ish) plays Davis’s rebellious teenage daughter, who’s forced to accompany her to the summit—only to end up working behind the scenes, hacking into security systems, and becoming her mother’s eyes in the sky, despite strict orders to stay out of it.
Rounding out the cast are Ramón Rodríguez, Douglas Hodge, Elizabeth Marvel, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Clark Gregg.
Mexican-born filmmaker Patricia Riggen directs the film. Riggen is best known for helming the 2015 Chilean miner disaster biopic The 33 and the acclaimed 2007 immigration drama Under the Same Moon. She has recently worked in television, directing episodes of Jack Ryan (Prime Video), Dopesick (Hulu), and Saint X (Hulu).
G20 is slated to premiere on Prime Video starting Thursday, April 10. Watch the trailer, above.
