"Final Destination: Bloodlines" Trailer: Death Targets an Entire Family in This New, Suspense-Filled Installment of the Iconic Horror Franchise
The iconic horror franchise is back with a family twist, as a new generation must outwit fate—or face a legacy of blood.
Horror fans raised on the scary thrillers of the early aughts would likely rank the Final Destination films among their favorites—and for good reason. The series has become one of the most entertaining horror franchises in recent memory. But the success of these films wasn’t necessarily rooted in gore or splatter—it came from the edge-of-your-seat tension created by witnessing elaborate and wildly imaginative death sequences.
Alfred Hitchcock once explained that the difference between suspense and thriller is this: if the characters in a movie know more than the audience, it’s a thriller. We, the audience, experience the events through the character’s limited perspective, heightening the tension of the unknown and delivering a thrilling sensation.
But if the audience knows more than the characters—allowing our imaginations to spiral wildly—it becomes pure suspense. For instance, when a character walks into a dark room and we already know there’s a killer hiding behind the curtain, the suspense becomes almost unbearable as we anxiously await the character’s inevitable fate.
The Final Destination franchise has always mastered that kind of suspense to riveting effect. That’s largely why it has grown in popularity over the years. The films’ death scenes have become iconic in their own right—sparking endless discussion and debate online over which deaths are the most creative, most shocking, or most memorable.
This year, the franchise returns with a new installment: Final Destination: Bloodlines. This chapter introduces a new twist by adding a family dynamic to the mix. Previous entries mostly centered around groups of teens or friends who somehow cheated death, only to be hunted down one by one by an imperceptible force—death itself—through elaborate, Rube Goldberg-style sequences.
Bloodlines asks a chilling new question: what if it’s not just a group of friends, but a family bound by blood who finds themselves in this inescapable, horrifying scenario? What if death isn’t just coming for individuals, but for an entire family line—intent on erasing it completely?
What do you do… what can you do?
Produced by Spider-Man filmmaker Jon Watts—who also conceived the film’s original story—Final Destination: Bloodlines brings a twist to the long-running franchise with the help of horror screenwriters Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Scream, Abigail) and Lori Evans Taylor (Bed Rest).
Bloodlines imagines a scenario where a woman not only cheats death but manages to save multiple lives during a horrifying event. But fate doesn’t forget. Decades later, she has a family of her own—and now it’s her grandchildren who must suffer the consequences.
Death has returned, not just to reclaim one soul, but to erase an entire family tree that was never meant to exist.
The cast includes Richard Harmon, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Owen Patrick Joyner, Rya Kihlstedt, Anna Lore, and Brec Bassinger. But most importantly, the late horror icon Tony Todd returns one last time in one of his final performances as the franchise’s enigmatic mortician, William Bludworth.
The film is directed by filmmaking duo Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, best known for writing and directing the cult 2018 sci-fi thriller Freaks. They also helmed the 2019 Disney Channel original movie Kim Possible.
Final Destination: Bloodlines hits theaters on May 16th. So, make sure you're prepared for one hell of a time!
