Explore a Dystopian '90s World with Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt and Various Robots in Russo Bros' New Netflix Retro-Futuristic Flick "The Electric State" - Watch the Trailer!
Filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo may still be best known for their MCU blockbusters, but that doesn't mean they aren't exploring new territory outside the comic book genre. With their latest Netflix feature, the Russo brothers dive into retro-futurism, a genre and style steeped in nostalgia and advanced technology. In this case, it's a '90s alternate world like you've never seen before.
Check out the official full-length trailer for The Electric State, a new Netflix film from the Russos starring Netflix star Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes, Damsel) as an orphaned teenager who embarks on a cross-country adventure to find her long-lost brother. Along the way, she encounters a robotic cartoon mascot, a hard-boiled human smuggler, and his robot sidekick as they venture into a walled-off forbidden zone in the southwest desert, where old, discarded robots live on their own.
The film takes place in an alternate dystopian 1990s, following a failed robot uprising, where robotic mascots and appliances not only gain self-awareness but also fight human armies for their independence. The result is a bleak '90s era filled with notable '90s nostalgia but featuring extremely advanced technology with a ban on robots, leaving the surviving droids to live in the desert.
Chris Pratt co-stars as the smuggler who helps Millie Bobby Brown's character in her quest to find her brother.
The supporting cast includes Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Giancarlo Esposito, and Stanley Tucci, with robot voice performances by Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Hank Azaria, Colman Domingo, and Alan Tudyk.
Directed and produced by the Russo brothers, the film is written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the writing duo behind the Russos' MCU hits, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Loosely inspired by artist Simon Stalenhag's concept art book of the same name, The Electric State will premiere on Netflix on March 14, 2025.
