"Dope Thief" Trailer: Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura’s Scheme Takes a Dangerous Turn in Apple TV's New Crime Series From Exec. Producer Ridley Scott
Executive produced by Ridley Scott, the eight-episode crime thriller follows two small-time hustlers (Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura) who rob the wrong drug dealer.
Now this is the onscreen pairing we didn’t know we needed—but thankfully, we’re getting it soon.
Starting next month, Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura star as a couple of low-rent thieves who find themselves in way over their heads when one of their schemes goes severely sideways in the new Apple original series Dope Thief.
Ever since Brian Tyree Henry first caught our attention co-starring in Donald Glover’s Atlanta, we’ve been consistently impressed with the choices he’s made throughout his career. His ability to seamlessly jump between projects and genres is a testament to just how great of an actor he is.
On that same note, Brazilian actor Wagner Moura has completely bowled us over with his performances over the years, especially his breakthrough turn as Pablo Escobar in Netflix’s Narcos. More recently, in Alex Garland’s Civil War, Moura delivered a world-weary, lived-in performance as a seasoned war photojournalist.
So, to have these two acting powerhouses sharing the same screen? We can expect nothing short of magic. And judging by this newly released trailer, Henry and Moura already seem to complement each other perfectly.
In Dope Thief, which is executive produced by Ridley Scott under his Scott Free Productions banner, Henry and Moura play Ray and Manny, childhood friends who grew up together on the streets of Philadelphia. Now adults, they’re barely scraping by, resorting to petty theft to make ends meet. But then they come up with what seems like the perfect scheme: robbing drug dealers by posing as DEA agents conducting house raids. It’s foolproof… until it isn’t. Until they rob someone they really shouldn’t have.
"You took our money and dope. Now I have to kill everyone you know," an ominous voice warns over a walkie-talkie as Ray and Manny speed away from a crime scene that didn't go as planned as seen in this trailer.
Now on the run, the duo scrambles to escape not only the real feds and police but also the ruthless drug dealers who want their product—and their revenge.
Dope Thief is created by showrunner Peter Craig, the co-screenwriter of The Town, The Batman, and Top Gun: Maverick. Craig—who is also the son of Oscar-winning actress Sally Field—is known for his crime novel Blood Father, which he adapted into a 2016 thriller starring Mel Gibson that earned solid reviews.
This Apple original series is based on the novel Dope Thief by Dennis Tafoya (see the image below).
Filmmaker Ridley Scott is directing the first episode of the series, which will run for eight episodes.
The supporting cast includes Marin Ireland, Kate Mulgrew, Nesta Cooper, Amir Arison, Dustin Nguyen and Ving Rhames.
Dope Thief is coming to Apple TV+ starting on Friday, March 14th with a two-episode premiere followed by new episodes every Friday through April 25.
Here’s the show’s official synopsis:
Based on Dennis Tafoya’s book of the same name, the series follows longtime Philly friends and delinquents (Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura) who pose as DEA agents to rob an unknown house in the countryside, only to have their small-time grift become a life-and-death enterprise, as they unwittingly reveal and unravel the biggest hidden narcotics corridor on the Eastern Seaboard.
