"Daredevil: Born Again" Official Trailer: Charlie Cox Returns as Marvel’s Hell’s Kitchen Vigilante in Disney’s Gritty MCU Reboot with Vincent D’Onofrio as The Kingpin
Charlie Cox Returns as Matt Murdock in Marvel’s Dark and Gritty Daredevil Reboot, Which Brings Back Fan-Favorite Characters
It's been a rocky journey. When Marvel regained the rights to Daredevil from their collaboration deal with Netflix, fans were initially thrilled at the prospect of their beloved red-suited vigilante from Hell's Kitchen officially joining the MCU. However, the excitement was tempered by the debut of several original Disney+ superhero shows that didn't quite live up to expectations. This led to an online reevaluation of what Netflix had accomplished with Daredevil, offering a grittier, darker take on the character that echoed the tone of Frank Miller's iconic comic book work.
Would Marvel be bold enough to follow that same approach? Well, no. Not exactly. There was an attempt to somehow fit the Daredevil universe that had already been established on Netflix, which fans had come to enjoy, into the broader MCU television world. That attempt, however, was unsuccessful. It was scrapped after months of filming, and the show was completely reworked. Well, it's nice to have the resources of a media empire to spend however they see fit. Marvel went back to the drawing board and came up with this idea: let's go back to how it was done before — gritty, dark, and plenty of blood and bone-breaking violence. A reborn, if you will.
So, here we are. Marvel has released the first official trailer for the highly anticipated MCU series Daredevil: Born Again, starring once again Charlie Cox as the titular Man Without Fear and Vincent D’Onofrio also back as his arch-nemesis, Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin. In fact, most of the main cast of the Marvel Netflix show has returned as well: Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Franklin "Foggy" Nelson, Ayelet Zurer as Wilson's wife, Vanessa Marianna-Fisk, and (the moment we have all been waiting for) Jon Bernthal returns as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher!
The trailer starts with a sit-down conversation between lawyer Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil (Cox) and Wilson Fisk (D’Onofrio). Very reminiscent of the famous diner scene in Michael Mann's Heat, where Al Pacino and Robert De Niro meet for the first time. The tension is there. Fisk asks Murdock about the reason he left the vigilante business, while Murdock offers a compliment about moving forward into politics and becoming the mayor. It's establishing that these two men are trying to let go of their violent past, but it seems inevitable they're on a collision course. And we expect this showdown will be explosive.
Executive produced by showrunner Dario Scardapane (The Punisher), who developed the series with producers Matt Corman and Chris Ord. The cast also features supporting turns from Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Zabryna Guevara, Clark Johnson, Wilson Bethel, and Lou Taylor Pucci.
Filmmaking duo Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson (Synchronic, The Endless), fresh off their acclaimed directing work on Loki and Moon Knight, directs the premiere episode.
Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere on Tuesday, March 4th, only on Disney+.
