"Broke" Trailer: Wyatt Russell Stars as Rugged Bronc Rider in This Gritty Neo-Western Drama About the Tolls of Rodeo Life

In this new drama, Russell plays a rodeo cowboy facing the end of his career, navigating physical and emotional challenges with the support of a star-studded cast.

Wyatt Russell will soon grace the big screen later this month with Thunderbolts, reprising his role as disgraced super soldier John Walker aka U.S. Agent. But if superhero movies aren’t your jam, well, Wyatt Russell has another movie coming out this month. And it’s far removed from the world of capes and spandex. Although, it is a world that requires a tremendous amount of courage and bravery.

In the upcoming neo-western drama Broke, Russell takes on the role of True Brandywine (wow, what a name!), a bareback bronc rider who, after years of bruises, injuries, and setbacks, faces the difficult realization that his career might be coming to an end. As True struggles with the physical and emotional toll of his profession, he must confront his own limits and question what his life will look like after the rodeo.

Russell, who has been building a pretty impressive acting career with breakout performances in Richard Linklater’s baseball dramedy Everybody Wants Some!!, the horror WWII thriller Overlord, and the true-crime miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, continues to showcase his range in Broke.

With his rugged charm and nuanced demeanor, Russell’s portrayal of True Brandywine will likely add another notch to his already impressive body of work, proving once again that not all “nepo babies” lack talent or the ability to carve out their own path.

You can mark us down as fans since his part in 22 Jump Street, but Wyatt Russell has consistently demonstrated his commitment to his roles, making it clear that his success isn’t just a product of his famous parents (Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn).

Written and directed by Carlyle Eubank, Broke sees Russell sharing the screen with some pretty heavy-hitters, including Dennis Quaid, Mary McDonnell, and Tom Skerritt. Rounding out the cast are Auden Thornton (Black Mirror: Beyond the Sea) and Johnny Berchtold (The Passenger).

Broke not only marks the feature debut of filmmaker Carlyle Eubank, who is best known for co-writing his filmmaker brother William Eubank’s Sundance sci-fi hit The Signal, but also the debut of Russell’s newly-minted banner, Slow Burn. It’s a production company Russell co-founded with his brother, Oliver Hudson, along with producer John Stalberg Jr.

Meanwhile, Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley’s production banner, Wild West Picture Show, is also onboard as producers.

BROKE is a contemporary western following the story of True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), a bareback bronc rider clinging to his fading rodeo career. When True gets trapped in a freak spring blizzard, he must battle injuries, illness, and the bitter cold. While fighting for his survival, True is forced to face his choices and the circumstances that led him to his tenuous situation.
