"Bring Her Back" Trailer: Sally Hawkins is a Desperate Mother Attempting to Bring Her Daughter Back from the Dead in New Horror Film From the Directors of 'Talk to Me'
From Talk to Me's Danny and Michael Philippou, this supernatural horror thriller explores the terrifying consequences of defying death as a mother tries to bring her dead daughter back to life.
One of the most haunting questions that lingers in a person’s mind when a loved one passes away too soon is: What could have been done to prolong their life? The death of a loved one is something everyone must face at some point, but each person experiences grief in their own way. Sometimes, guilt sets in as you question how you could have done more, said more, or been there more. But sooner or later, acceptance must come, even if it’s a long and difficult journey.
But what if acceptance doesn’t come… what if it never comes—and all you have is that guilt weighing on your chest like a ton of bricks? What then? We suppose guilt turns into grief, then into anger, and eventually into action. But it’s the action part that might soon spiral to extreme levels, pushing someone to do things they never thought possible in the wake of their loss.
This is where Bring Her Back comes in. This new scare-fest, as the title might suggest, delves into the unsettling concept of bringing someone back from the dead… or at least bringing a spirit back from the great beyond. It’s a provocative idea that pushes the boundaries of grief, guilt, and the terrifying consequences of tampering with the natural order of things. It’s the same reason why something like Stephen King’s Pet Sematary has become a favorite among horror fans. There’s just something morbidly captivating about exploring the dark and disturbing ramifications of defying death and the emotional anarchy that comes with it.
Starring Sally Hawkins, of The Shape of Water fame, Bring Her Back is the sophomore effort from Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian filmmaking brothers behind the 2022 horror sensation Talk to Me.
Despite their background as popular YouTube content creators, the Philippou Brothers have emerged as legitimate new voices in the horror genre, proving that it’s possible to break out from a social media platform and make a huge mark in the film industry.
With Bring Her Back, the Philippou Brothers are once again striking into the heart of what makes horror such a compelling genre, exploring our morbid curiosity about death, the afterlife, and the haunting idea of resurrection.
Much like their breakout debut Talk to Me—widely considered one of the best horror films in recent years—the duo continues their fascination with communicating with spirits. But this time, it’s not just about contact from beyond the grave; it’s about bringing a spirit back to where it was meant to belong. If Talk to Me explored the thrill and terror of opening a door to the dead, Bring Her Back looks like it’s about what happens when you refuse to let that door close.
In the film, Sally Hawkins plays a foster mother caring for two orphaned siblings, a brother and sister portrayed by Billy Barratt and Sora Wong. When she suddenly brings a new, eerily quiet boy with a strange facial birthmark named Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips) into their home—claiming she’s just taken him in—the children begin to sense something is seriously off.
As they observe Oliver’s strange behavior and their foster mother’s increasingly erratic demeanor, the siblings uncover a chilling possibility: still haunted by the tragic loss of her own daughter, their foster mother may have turned to black magic, using a dark ritual to bring her child back from the dead—her soul now possibly residing in the body of this mysterious new boy.
Once again, the filmmaking brothers are teaming up with A24 Films, the studio behind Talk to Me, as Bring Her Back is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated horror films of the summer.
Danny and Michael Philippou directed the film, working from a script that Danny co-wrote with his Talk to Me writing collaborator Bill Hinzman.
Bring Her Back will be conjured into theaters on May 30th.
So, get ready for a spine-chilling time that just might have you questioning the thin line between life, death, and what happens when those boundaries are crossed.
