"Borderline" Trailer: Samara Weaving Faces a Fan-Turned-Stalker in New Darkly Comic Hostage Thriller with Ray Nicholson
From Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden, this tense hostage thriller explores obsession, fame, and the terrifying cost of celebrity.
We live in a time where some of the world’s biggest pop stars have developed an unusually close connection with their most ardent fans, largely through social media. These superfans often give themselves catchy names and are widely credited as a driving force behind their idol’s success. But they’re also notoriously aggressive online, fiercely defending their favorite star at any cost.
This raises a serious question: Are we letting these “fans” get away with too much? Could a fan become so delusional that they unintentionally put their favorite idol in harm’s way—without even realizing just how dangerous they’ve become?
Well, enter Borderline, a new darkly comic thriller from Jimmy Warden, the screenwriter behind the hit crime comedy Cocaine Bear. Warden makes his directorial debut with this twisted film that explores the cost of fame and how some fans can become so obsessed that they cross the line—from friend to foe and from sane to borderline psycho.
Check out the newly released trailer, featuring Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as a world-famous pop star who gets the shock of her life when she discovers an obsessive fan has broken into her house. If that’s not terrifying enough, he proceeds to take her hostage as a deranged expression of his love, convinced they’re meant to be married. But things spiral even further when it’s revealed that he’s not the only fan lurking in the shadows, hoping to get closer to her.
Ray Nicholson, son of Jack Nicholson and recently seen in Smile 2, shares the screen with Weaving, playing her psychotic number-one fan. Using his now-infamous trademark grin, Nicholson adds a bit of devilish charm as the ultimate worst-case-scenario fanboy.
The cast also includes Alba Baptista (Warrior Nun) and Jimmie Fails (The Last Black Man in San Francisco), with Eric Dane (Euphoria, Grey’s Anatomy) co-starring as Weaving’s loyal bodyguard, who quickly finds himself in way over his head with all the chaos unfolding.
Jimmy Warden writes and directs, while Barbie and Saltburn producer Tom Ackerley produces alongside Josey McNamara, Hadeel Reda, and Brian Duffield.
Borderline is coming to theaters and on VOD on March 14. Watch the trailer above.
