"A Minecraft Movie" Final Trailer: Jack Black and Jason Momoa Join Forces for a Colorful, Comedic Journey in the Minecraft Universe
Jack Black plays the ultimate Minecraft expert, guiding a group of misfits—including Jason Momoa’s over-the-top Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison—through the pixelated Overworld.
What is Minecraft? Well, okay, it’s a hugely popular video game where players explore a blocky, virtually generated 3D world, gathering raw materials to build structures and craft tools. Sure, we get that.
But here’s the thing—the game itself doesn’t have a built-in narrative to follow for a film adaptation. On one hand, that’s terrific! It means there are endless possibilities for bringing Minecraft to the big screen. On the other hand, it raises a big question: Who can come up with an original story that still captures the essence of the game?
Well, filmmaker Jared Hess, of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre fame, has stepped up to the plate. And he’s reunited with Jack Black for what will likely be a huge hit for kids!
Now, will it be a global box office monster like The Super Mario Bros. Movie? That film not only became a cultural phenomenon but also proved that video game adaptations—no matter how silly they might seem at first—are nothing to sneeze at.
Some might even argue that video games are poised to replace the superhero genre as Hollywood’s next big obsession, forcing studios to rethink their entire business model. So, there will be a lot of eyeballs watching to see how well A Minecraft Movie performs at the box office. If it turns out to be a monster hit, you can bet more video game adaptations will be fast-tracked—even ones without built-in story narratives to follow.
So, maybe—just maybe—there’s still hope for that Tecmo Bowl movie we’ve always dreamed of! (Anyone? Anyone? Okay, maybe that was just us.)
Well, Jack Black isn’t the only big personality in this big-screen Minecraft adaptation. He’s joined by Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa—who not only towers over Jack’s frame but is fully game to match his comedic antics.
And let’s be real—Momoa might be the only actor built like a New York Giants linebacker who can actually pull off a look like this: a frizzy mullet, a hot pink leather fringed jacket, fingerless gloves, and a pair of Bret “Hitman” Hart-style sunglasses. The glasses are a nice touch.
In the film, Momoa plays a character named Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison. He, along with three other “misfits”—a young nerdy boy, Henry (newcomer Sebastian Eugene Hansen), a young girl, Natalie (Emma Myers, from Wednesday), and a tracksuit-wearing spitfire, Dawn (Danielle Brooks, from Orange Is the New Black and Peacemaker)—find themselves unexpectedly transported through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a strange, cubic wonderland of imagination.
To find their way back home, they must master the world of Minecraft with the help of Steve (enter a bushy salt-and-pepper-bearded Jack Black), an expert crafter with deep knowledge of the game’s rules and mechanics.
Now, since the release of the first trailer five months ago, the buzz online hasn’t exactly been glowing. Plenty of people have rolled their eyes at the idea of turning Minecraft into a feature film. But to be honest—we had the same reaction when The Super Mario Bros. Movie was first announced. And look how that turned out.
But no matter if Minecraft turns out to be a hit or turns out to be another poor attempt to cash in on a very popular property, the video game adaptation craze ain't going anywhere. It's here to stay. And there might be a possible near-future where we hear an announcer say, “Now the Oscar goes to ... Zelda, the Movie!”
Co-starring Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement, A Minecraft Movie is directed by Napoleon Dynamite mastermind Jared Hess, marking his first live-action film in eight years since his Zach Galifianakis-Kristen Wiig-starring crime comedy Masterminds. However, Hess just last year returned to co-direct the Netflix animated musical comedy Thelma the Unicorn, which didn't pan out critically.
A Minecraft Movie will be coming to theaters everywhere starting on April 4th. Watch the official final trailer, above.
Here’s the official synopsis:
