They say the television landscape will be shifting in the new year. 2025 might end up becoming a transitional period, with studio executives more apprehensive than ever when it comes to greenlighting projects. As studios lose their direction amid corporate mergers, it may become more challenging for showrunners to showcase originality, especially when most higher-ups prefer to stick to the same old playbook.
To be fair, since the creation of television, show creators have always battled to uphold the principles of telling original stories, striving to transform the medium into something more than just a tool for selling detergent and washing machines. Looking at current trends in television, a few predictions for 2025 come to mind. We’ll likely see more screen legends, known for their award-winning performances in films, finding a new home in streaming. Classic genres like detective procedurals, medical dramas, and legal thrillers will continue to dominate, but there may also be more genre-blending shows in the mix. And 90s nostalgia will undoubtedly play a significant role in 2025, whether through reviving old shows from the 90s and the early 2000s or creating new series set in that era to offer viewers a sense of familiarity.
The pessimist TV watcher might argue that the era of peak TV has reached its limits, and we’re now entering an era of mid-TV, where everything is just okay ("mid"), but nothing stands out or worth watching. However, the optimist might counter that there will always be a fight against mediocrity, and the harder the battle, the more space there will be for a new, unforeseeable show that could ultimately reshape the television landscape once again.
As we say goodbye to 2024, let’s raise our remotes toward the sky and wish for a better 2025, including more exciting choices for entertainment. God knows it will certainly be a year where most viewers will be eager to escape, even if just for a few hours.
