Brandon Sklenar’s Spencer Dutton Fights to Protect the Family Ranch in Taylor Sheridan’s Explosive Second Season of Yellowstone Prequel Series

Imagine you just got word that your family is in deep trouble and desperately needs your help. But they live half a world away. Sure, in the modern world, it might take just a few days to get there. But what if it’s the year 1923? Before the advent of international air travel. It would take months, if not the better part of a year, to get back home. Now add a few unfortunate mishaps, including a capsized boat trip, being separated from your beautiful new wife, and finding yourself wandering with ruffians and zero money to your name. Now you understand a little more about the unbelievable predicament Spencer Dutton is facing in the second season of 1923, the Yellowstone prequel spinoff series from executive producer-writer-director Taylor Sheridan.

So, who the hell is Spencer Dutton? Well, for the uninitiated, Spencer (played by breakout Brandon Sklenar) is the prodigal son of James and Margaret Dutton (Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren). He’s also a WWI war hero and has spent the last couple of years in Africa as a big-game hunter with a lethal reputation. He’s basically Ernest Hemingway to the 25th power!

Looking at the Dutton family tree, Spencer is the grandfather of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) and the great-grandfather of Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes). So, you better believe that a lot is riding on his return to Montana, especially as he’s been called back to protect the family ranch from ruthless landgrabbers. Unfortunately, Spencer is taking his damn time to get there. But it’s not his fault—there are just some circumstances beyond his control.

In Season One of 1923, a powerful and wealthy business tycoon, Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), has moved into James Dutton's territory, determined to take over his land by any means necessary. Whitfield has enlisted the help of Scottish sheepherder Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn), who already harbors a deep vendetta against the Dutton family. Creighton is tasked with raising an army for Whitfield, as a land war seems inevitable. With James Dutton (Harrison Ford) still recovering from nearly dying in a gun battle, the only man Whitfield truly fears is James’s son, Spencer. Spencer’s infamous reputation as a military-trained killer has spread far and wide, making him the one obstacle Whitfield can't easily overcome.

Season Two is expected to be an explosive one when it returns next month. Cast members Julia Schlaepfer, Michelle Randolph, Darren Mann, and Robert Patrick are returning as well. Meanwhile, Dexter star Jennifer Carpenter joins the cast of Season 2, which is said to be written entirely by Taylor Sheridan.
