James McAvoy has 23 disturbing identities living in his body in the new trailer for the upcoming suspense horror "Split," which is the latest twisted offering from writer-director-producer M. Night Shyamalan.

The "X-Men" star plays Kevin, a mentally disturbed psychopath suffering from a severe case of split personality. When Kevin abducts three unsuspecting teen girls -- played by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Haley Lu Richardson (The Edge of Seventeen), and Jessica Sula (TV's Skins) -- from a mall parking lot, he and his other 22 personalities lock them up in an underground dungeon. The girls are to serve as witnesses to Kevin's yet-to-be-seen, 24th identity. It's his most frightening manifestation to date, which he has nicknamed "The Beast."

Co-starring veteran actress Betty Buckley (TV's Eight Is Enough, Carrie) as Kevin's concerned doctor, "Split" will be arriving in theaters on January 20, 2017.

Following last year's breakout hit The Visit, Shyamalan reunites with producer Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series, The Gift) for the film.

While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him -- as well as everyone around him -- as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.
