Gael Garcia Bernal is on the hunt for exiled Chilean political poet Pablo Neruda in the new U.S. trailer for "Neruda."

Chile's official Oscar submission for the Best Foreign Language Film of the year, this 1940s period drama seemingly employs dark satirical humor and subtle visual flights of fancy to chronicle the years that Nobel Prize-winning surrealist Pablo Neruda (played here by Chilean actor Luis Gnecco) was persecuted for his anti-government, communist beliefs, forced to leave his country, and hide in several parts of South America -- all while he was writing an epic book of poems, which would be later regarded as one of his greatest masterpieces, "Canto General."

Garcia Bernal, reteaming with Pablo Larrain, the acclaimed Chilean filmmaker of the Oscar-nominated foreign drama "NO," plays a police inspector appointed by the Chilean president to capture the persecuted poet in the hopes of preventing him from becoming a more influential political activist.

"Neruda" is Larrain's second film of 2016. Oddly enough, the prolific director will be competing with himself as "Neruda" is slated for a U.S. theatrical run on December 16th, two weeks after the release of Larrain's other directed film, the much-buzzed-about Jacqueline Kennedy biopic "Jackie" with Natalie Portman.

synopsis:
Beloved poet Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) is also the most famous communist in post-WWII Chile. When the political tides shift, he is forced underground, with a perseverant police inspector (Gael García Bernal) hot on his trail. Meanwhile, in Europe, the legend of the poet hounded by the policeman grows, and artists led by Pablo Picasso clamor for Neruda’s freedom. Neruda, however, sees the struggle with his police inspector nemesis as an opportunity to reinvent himself. He cunningly plays with the inspector, leaving clues designed to make their game of cat-and-mouse ever more perilous. In this story of a persecuted poet and his obsessive adversary, Neruda recognizes his own heroic possibilities: a chance to become a symbol for liberty, as well as a literary legend.
