Juggling the responsibilities of being the crowned head of England with the responsibilities of being "a sister, a daughter, and a wife" is a tremendous challenge; a job with major public and personal drawbacks. And it's something that a young Queen Elizabeth II had to bear when she began her reign in the early 1950s. Her early struggles appear to be the driving force behind Netflix's new British series created by acclaimed screenwriter/playwright Peter Morgan, of "Frost/Nixon" and "The Queen" fame.

"The Crown" stars Claire Foy (Wolf Hall) as a 25-year-old Elizabeth II who, after her coronation, is committed to performing her royal duties and maintaining a proper public image, despite the damaging effects it has on her personal life. Which includes her new marriage with Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh (played by Doctor Who's Matt Smith), and her fraught relationship with her younger and only sister, Princess Margaret (Me Before You's Vanessa Kirby).

Greenlit for ten episodes, "The Crown" also stars Jared Harris as King George VI, John Lithgow as legendary Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Ben Miles as Peter Townsend, a divorced father of two, who had a controversial love affair with then 23-year-old Princess Margaret, 16 years his junior.

Three-time Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader) has directed the hour-long pilot for the upcoming series, which is set to premiere November 4 on Netflix. Watch a new trailer, above.

The Crown focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world's most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, and a young woman takes the throne....a new era is dawning. Peter Morgan's masterfully researched scripts reveal the Queen's private journey behind the public facade with daring frankness. Prepare to be welcomed into the coveted world of power and privilege and behind locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace....the leaders of an empire await.
