Dan Stevens is either "mentally ill" ... or "the most powerful mutant we've ever encountered."

Check out a new 30-second trailer for FX's new series, "Legion," which is loosely set within the X-Men universe, and is based on the mutant comic-book character of the same name.

The former "Downton Abbey" star plays David Haller (a.k.a. Legion), a schizophrenic man living at a psychiatric hospital. While under close supervision, David suffers from strange hallucinatory visions, some involving a mysterious woman (played by Fargo's Rachel Keller). The thing is, his visions aren't just made-up fantasies. They're merely manifestations of David's mutant telepathic powers. In other words, he only thinks he's crazy.

"Legion" was developed by Noah Hawley, the Emmy-winning creator of the "Fargo" series, who also writes and directs the pilot episode.

(Note: the "Legion" character in the comic books is actually the mentally troubled son of Professor Charles Xavier. It's not known yet if that will play a factor in the upcoming series.)

Co-starring Aubrey Plaza, Hamish Linklater, and Jean Smart, "Legion" is currently slated to premiere in February on the FX network.

synopsis:
Legion follows David Haller, a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and visions might be real.
