Michael Fassbender enters the "Animus" in the new trailer for the hotly-anticipated action-adventure movie "Assassin's Creed," which is director Justin Kurzel's adaptation of Ubisoft's ultra-successful video game franchise.

Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, a character created for the forthcoming movie, which takes place in a future world where a high-tech machine, called "Animus," can mentally, emotionally, and physically link a person to the genetic memories of his or her ancestor. Lynch is an incarcerated man, who is chosen to undergo this quasi-time-traveling experiment as he happens to be the direct descendant of a secret society assassin who fought against tyranny during the Spanish Inquisition.

Fassbender is joined by Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, both of whom starred in Kurzel's gritty 2015 adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth." The cast also includes Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams, Brendan Gleeson, Khalid Abdalla, Denis Menochet, Octavia Selena Alexandru, and Callum Turner.

"Assassin's Creed" arrives in theaters December 21.

synopsis:
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
