The small-screen version of Lemony Snicket's best-selling children's book series is coming to Netflix, and the streaming company has recently unveiled a teaser trailer and release date.

Mark your calendars for January 13, 2017 (which, of course, is Friday the 13th) as that is the unfortunate date that Netflix will premiere their hotly-anticipated adaptation of "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," starring Neil Patrick Harris as the diabolical Count Olaf.

The upcoming Victorian-esque series, which tells the darkly satiric saga of three young orphan siblings, the Baudelaire children, who are systematically placed under the guardianship of their evil, conniving uncle, Count Olaf, is the latest iteration of the popular book franchise by author Daniel Handler, known for working under the narrator-persona "Lemony Snicket," who is portrayed in the above teaser by TV actor Patrick Warburton (Tick, Rules of Engagement).

The books were first adapted into a cult 2004 film that starred Jim Carrey as Count Olaf. This version, in which the first two episodes are being directed by "Men in Black" helmer Barry Sonnenfeld, sees Neil Patrick Harris as Olaf. While 13-year-old actress Malina Weissman (TV's Supergirl) and newcomer Louis Hynes have been cast as Violet and Klaus Baudelaire. Other cast members include Joan Cusack, Bernadette Peters, and Aasif Mandvi.

The show was developed by TV producer-writer Mark Hudis (Nurse Jackie, That '70s Show, True Blood). Sonnenfeld and Handler are both serving as executive producers on the eight-episode series.

synopsis:
Based on the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) and starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans -- Violet, Klaus, and Sunny -- whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling his many devious plans and disguises, in order to discover clues to their parents' mysterious death.
