HBO has released the first U.S. trailer for "The Young Pope," a fictional drama series about the rise of the first ever American Pontiff, starring Jude Law, Diane Keaton, and James Cromwell.

Set to make its US debut in early 2017, the ten-part series comes from acclaimed Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino, who wrote and directed last year's critically lauded drama "Youth" with Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel. Sorrentino also won the Best Foreign Film Oscar for 2014's "The Great Beauty."

"The Young Pope," which will first premiere in the UK and other parts of Europe at the end of October, sees Law as Lenny Belardo, an ultra-conservative, yet deeply flawed Cardinal who worked his way up the ranks to become the first American and youngest Pope in history.

Co-starring Ludivine Sagnier, Cecile De France, Scott Shepherd, and Silvio Orlando, the HBO series was produced in partnership with UK's Sky Network and France's Canal Plus.

synopsis:
Lenny Belardo is no ordinary Pope. He is the youngest and first American Pope in history. We find him on the morning of his first day in office, preparing to enter into the power struggles inside the closed, secretive Vatican state.
