The first human born on Mars is a 16-year-old kid. And like most Earthbound teens, he spends a lot of time chatting on the internet.

Check out a brand-new trailer for the teen adventure, coming-of-age drama "The Space Between Us," starring Asa Butterfield, who can also be seen this weekend in Tim Burton's new fantasy movie "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children."

Set in the not-too-distant future, the film, which also stars Gary Oldman, Carla Gugino, and Britt Robertson, centers on Gardner Elliot (Butterfield), the teenage son of an astronaut who died during childbirth while on a groundbreaking mission to Mars. After spending his whole life on a Mars space station with a group of scientists and a talking robot, Gardner is finally given permission to return to his mother's home planet, despite having a rare, Mars-related heart condition.

But as soon as he arrives on Earth, Gardner secretly sets out on his own to search for his long-lost biological father. He first meets up with his online pen pal, a skeptical yet free-spirited high school girl from Colorado (played by Robertson). And before you know it, they're off on a wild cross-country adventure, where they soon come face-to-face with a strange and menacing beast -- what Earthlings call, "a horse."

"The Space Between Us" is directed by Peter Chelsom (Shall We Dance, The Mighty) and is now slated to hit theaters February 3, 2017.

synopsis:
In this interplanetary adventure, a space shuttle embarks on the first mission to colonize Mars, only to discover after takeoff that one of the astronauts is pregnant. Shortly after landing, she dies from complications while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet -- never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot -- an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he's never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, he's eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars -- from the most simple to the extraordinary. But once his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere. Eager to find his father, Gardner escapes the team of scientists and joins with Tulsa on a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe.
