British journalist and investigating satirist Louis Theroux makes an acerbic effort to uncover America's most secretive religion in the new U.S. trailer for the documentary "My Scientology Movie."

Theroux gets a hold of former top Scientology executive and now vocal critic Marty Rathbun. Based on Rathbun's first-hand experiences, they recreate the religion's questionable training practices by staging tense reenactments with local actors. But while making the documentary, Theroux is continually harassed by incensed Scientology members as the church makes a concerted effort to disrupt the film's production.

Directed by John Dower (Thrilla in Manila) and produced by two-time Oscar-winning documentary producer Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar Man, Man on Wire), "My Scientology Movie" will be hitting theaters and VOD in January 2017.

synopsis:
Inspired by the Church's use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the organization Theroux uses actors to replay some incidents people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. In a bizarre twist, it becomes clear that the Church is also making a film about Louis Theroux. Suffused with a good dose of humor and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE is stranger than fiction.
