"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams is such a huge fan of Don Coscarelli's cult horror thriller "Phantasm" that he named Gwendoline Christie's Stormtrooper character, Captain Phasma, after the evil chrome sphere featured in the 1979 film. And after learning that the original prints of "Phantasm" were in dire need of repair, Abrams (through his production company, Bad Robot) offered to spearhead a brand-new 4K restoration, complete with a new 5.1 surround sound mix. Now it's ready for the public to enjoy.

Check out the trailer for "Phantasm: Remastered," the upcoming re-release of the newly restored cult classic, starring the late, Angus Scrimm as the iconic supernatural undertaker, the Tall Man.

"Phantasm: Remastered," which was followed by three sequels during the late '80s and early '90s, will be released in theaters and on demand next month, Friday, October 7. (Side note: A new, final fifth installment from Coscarelli, titled "Phantasm: Ravager," will also be released in theaters and VOD on that same day, Oct 7).
