FX has released a couple of promo spots for the upcoming comic-book-based series "Legion," which is an offshoot of FOX's X-Men/Mutant franchise.

In the series, former "Downton Abbey" star Dan Stevens (who will also be seen as Disney's Beast in next year's live-action remake "Beauty and the Beast") plays a mentally troubled, schizophrenic man named David Haller, better known in the comic book world as "Legion." While living in a psychiatric hospital, Haller suffers from hallucinations and strange visions of a mysterious woman (played by Rachel Keller) with whom he might possibly share a telepathic connection. Haller, at this point, doesn't know he's a mutant and a powerful telepath.

(Note: in the comics, Legion is the son of Professor Charles Xavier, who, like his television counterpart, also suffers from severe mental illness.)

Co-starring Aubrey Plaza, Hamish Linklater, and Jean Smart, the FX series comes from Noah Hawley, the Emmy-winning creator of the "Fargo" series. Hawley also directed the pilot episode, which will be premiering in the first quarter of 2017.

synopsis:
Legion follows David Haller, a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and visions might be real.
