Oscar Isaac, Christian Bale and The Walk's Charlotte Le Bon find themselves caught in a love triangle, as well as behind enemy lines in the first trailer for the WWI drama "The Promise," which will have its world premiere at TIFF on Sunday.

The film casts Oscar Isaac as an Armenian medical student who travels to study in Constantinople where he meets a beautiful young artist named Ana (Le Bon), who is currently seeing an American Photojournalist (Christian Bale) who is busy covering the war. With the country being quickly consumed by chaos, Michael (Isaac) decides that he has to get his family safely to the border, but only with the help of Chris (Bale) and Ana, who is also wanted by the Turkish Empire for her Armenian heritage. The trio soon finds themselves under fire and risking it all for freedom, which eventually leads to Michael and Ana falling for one another, and Chris wondering if all's fair in love and war.

Written and directed by Terry George (Hotel Rwanda, Reservation Road) and co-written by Robin Swicord (Wakefield, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), the film co-stars Shohreh Aghdashloo, Angela Sarafyan, Jean Reno, and James Cromwell.

"The Promise" will screen at TIFF this weekend, where it will soon find a US distributor for a future release date.

synopsis:
A humble Armenian apothecary, Michael (Oscar Isaac), leaves his village in southern Anatolia to study medicine in the capital. Michael has betrothed himself to a village girl in order to bankroll his studies with her dowry. His mother (Shohreh Aghdashloo) warns him not to marry for money, but Michael feels confident that, with time, he and his wife-to-be will come to love each other.

But that is before Michael meets Ana (Charlotte Le Bon). Graceful, Paris-educated, and talented at both drawing and dance, Ana seems the girl of Michael's dreams. But Michael is determined to keep his promise. What's more, Ana is already in a relationship with Chris (Christian Bale), a worldly American photo-journalist. These three souls are swept up in a drama greater than any of them could have imagined when the Ottoman Empire joins the Central Powers and widespread violence begins.
