David Lynch will likely be remembered for his darkly moody and provocative films (Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive, etc.) or perhaps he'll be best recognized for his highly influential, brain-twisting mystery series "Twin Peaks" (which, after a 25-year hiatus, is set to return next year on Showtime). But what many may not realize is that Lynch has also enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a surrealist painter.

In documentary filmmaker Jon Nguyen's intimate portrait "David Lynch: The Art Life," the 70-year-old auteur opens up and shares his personal journey as a multifaceted artist and experimental filmmaker who came from humble beginnings in small-town Montana to find himself attending art school in Philadelphia before eventually landing in Los Angeles.

"David Lynch: The Art Life" just premiered at the Venice Film Festival and will set to screen next month, in October at the London Film Festival. A promotional trailer has recently emerged online; you can watch it above.
