Director Paul Verhoeven is back with a new film and many are saying it's his best work in recent memory. The 78-year-old Dutch filmmaker, who is perhaps best known for either his gritty sci-fi actioners (Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers) or his sexually provocative melodramas (Basic Instinct, Showgirls), is delving into the controversial subject of sexual assault with "Elle," a French-language psychological/mystery thriller that stars veteran French actress Isabelle Huppert (Amour, The Piano Teacher). You can now watch the film's newly-released U.S. trailer, above.

In the film, Huppert plays a high-powered business executive at a video game company. While alone in her house, she is brutally attacked by a masked sexual prowler. In the aftermath of the crime, she proceeds to take the unconventional steps to catch the rapist herself and embarks on her own investigation as she whittles down a list of potential suspects -- starting with a couple of her own employees.

Back in May, "Elle" had premiered to rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival. It's set to screen next week at TIFF and also next month at the New York Film Festival before opening in U.S. theaters on November 11.

synopsis:
Michele (Isabelle Huppert) seems indestructible. Head of a successful video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michele's life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game-a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control.
