He's tackled the classic literary works of William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy. Now for his latest directing effort, James Franco is taking on one of John Steinbeck's Great Depression-era novels, "In Dubious Battle."

The sprawling period drama, which is set to make its world premiere next week at the Venice Film Festival, features an all-star cast that includes Franco, Nat Wolff, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Selena Gomez, Bryan Cranston, Vincent D'Onofrio, Sam Shepard, Josh Hutcherson, Ahna O'Reilly, Zach Braff, and Scott Haze.

Loosely based on the Californian fruit-workers' strike of 1933, the film follows a young embittered activist (Wolff) who is recruited to join the California labor movement by an ambitious organizer (Franco).

"In Dubious Battle" is also scheduled to screen in September at the Toronto International Film Festival. As of yet, the film doesn't have an official release date, but a promotional trailer has been released online. Watch it above.

synopsis:
In the California apple country, nine hundred migratory workers rise up "in dubious battle" against the landowners. The group takes on a life of its own-stronger than its individual members and more frightening. Led by the doomed Jim Nolan, the strike is founded on his tragic idealism-on the "courage never to submit or yield." Published in 1936, In Dubious Battle is considered the first major work of Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Steinbeck.
