Science fiction and westerns are two type of genres that don't necessarily go together. But they do appear to make a captivating combo in the new trailer for HBO's hotly anticipated small-screen adaptation of Michael Crichton's cult 1973 film "Westworld."

Boasting an all-star cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton, and Ed Harris, the HBO series centers around a virtual-reality theme park designed to resemble the old American West, where wealthy visitors pay to have an immersive experience. However, things go astray when the android models that were created to populate the fantasy world start to become self-aware and dangerously unpredictable.

James Marsden, Jimmi Simpson, Rodrigo Santoro, and Angela Sarafyan co-star.

"Westworld," which hails from executive producers Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest, The Dark Knight), Lisa Joy (Burn Notice), and J.J. Abrams, is set to air on Sunday, October 2nd. The series will run for ten episodes, with Nolan helming the one-hour opener.

"Westworld" is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin. The one-hour drama series is inspired by the film of the same name, written and directed by Michael Crichton.
