A childish Halloween game through the woods becomes all too real in the trailer for "Boys in the Trees," a supernatural teen thriller from Australia, which is set to premiere in a couple of weeks at both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festival.

Making his feature film debut, writer-director Nicholas Verso seemingly borrows elements from "The Lost Boys" -- and even perhaps "Let the Right One In" -- to create his own vision of surrealistic horror. The story involves two skateboarding teenage boys (played by Aussie teen actors Toby Wallace and Gulliver McGrath), who agree to squash their beef and become friends again on Halloween night. But on their way home through the forest, they find themselves stepping into a strange netherworld of ghouls, goblins, and ghosts.

"Boys in the Trees" is the feature-length sequel to Verso's acclaimed 2013 short film The Last Time I Saw Richard , which also starred Toby Wallace. "Boys" is currently seeking distribution and as of yet doesn't have a release date.

synopsis:
It's Halloween 1997 - the last night of high school for Corey, Jango and their skater gang, The Gromits. Childhood is over and adult life beckons. But for Corey, his past has some unfinished business. When he encounters Jonah, a former childhood friend but now victimised by Jango's cruel streak, Corey takes pity on him and agrees to walk him home for old time's sake.

What starts off as a normal walk through empty suburban streets descends into something darker and magical as they tell each other ghost stories, drawing upon their fears of the world around them. As they walk through their memories and ghosts of the past, Corey is surprised to discover how much he still has in common with his abandoned friend.

But on the night of the grave's delight, even the most buried truths will find a way of coming to life.
